Crazy price mego customs

Why are there insane prices going on on eBay?
One custom Batman $400? Come on! That's more than my BBQ Grill! Seriously?
Maybe it's just me, and everyone is crazy. I don't know. I have cool stuff, but even I would not post that. Now, if it was a large lot of maybe rare or hard to find mego's, AHI, or Lincoln Monsters, etc. then maybe, but NOT FOR ONE.
Insanity.

I assume that you are talking about the Flatt Batmen on ebay right now. They tend to be a bit overpriced due to the allure of the name Flatt.

It will be interesting to see if these ones will sell for the asking prices. So far in the seller's history, they only have a huge collection of signed Playboy Playmate photos.

Whether one agrees with the value of a Flatt custom or not, it does help to understand the context and history of Flatt figures, and Mego custom culture.

As much as we complain, I truly believe we will be looking back on these past years as a kind of second Golden Age of Mego and that we should bask in it while we can. Just try and imagine a time, the dark ages of the nineties when there was no Doc Mego, EMCE, BifBangPow!, CTVT, Cast-a-Way Toys, Zica, and barely even an internet.

Print Magazines were still the way many of us connected to any kind of Toy Collecting community. Charlee Flatt was featured in a few of these magazines at the time. And it felt like no one had seen anything like it before... NEW Megos, featuring a wish list of characters that Mego never made, and many of them with improved features, as if Mego had continued to make the figures into contemporary times. Due to this exposure, his work at the time came into high demand, and amongst some collectors his name still commands a high cachet value. He was arguably a ground zero for the Mego custom culture we now enjoy today.



There probably needs to be a footnote (and a cautionary tale) in the history of ReMegos, regarding the Flatt World brand of Toys that also preceded the ReMego Renaissance back circa 1999.

The Point is: We are at a collectors Forum. How can a member compare collectibles Prices with a bbq ?? If you donīt have the money for your toys AND your bbq.....stopp collecting.
I understand that if you are NOT a collector you can be surprised what People are willing to spend for their Hobbies, but calling yourself a collector and call other collector Prices "insane" I have no understanding for that.

And NO, I am not starting a discussion again on wether Charlee Flatt is the best customizer or not. Everyone can judge for himself.

News Flash: The Flatt rush is over. He's not making any more. People aren't buying any more (not like they used to). And they don't command the prices that they used to.

I know that Flatt collectors still live in the 90's believing that you can still get over a grand for one of his figures, but those days are LONG gone. These figures will not sell on ebay at those prices.

Is his work cool? You bet. Was he innovative in his day? Absolutely. Do I like his work? Yes, I do. But...none of that matters now. The Flatt collecting pool is very shallow and very small and there just aren't any new people joining the over-priced Flatt party.

And that all makes sense...but what Flatt collectors have to understand is that Flatt's DAY is over. The only people who want his stuff HAVE his stuff.
