    Neat idea, but hammerig it shut might be tricky. You could find a proper sized dowel and wedge it in there, filing off any extra.

      What about pvc tubing? what type of glue would work with that?

        What about using a permanent marker or other kind of pen with a fat tube? Or how about thick leather? Leather wrapped around a dowel with the edge of the leather superglued closed, and a bottom also glued on. (Pre-wrap the dowel with plastic or wax-paper so the leather wont stick to it.) Saturate the leather and let it dry next to something warm. Maybe soak it and dry it twice. The leather should get really stiff from the wet/dry process and hold it's shape well. It could be left on the dowel until it's all decorated. That would probably work good.
