    What If?...Marvel Super-Gals

I've always wondered what characters might comprise a set of four Marvel Super-Gals.

Any ideas? Would it include a villainess, perhaps Enchantress, be included? (Bear in mind character exposure in the Mego era; I'd exclude any superheroines created after 1980.)

I'm ruling out X-Men as a team subset, and suggest:

    Scarlet Witch
    Black Widow
    Spider-Woman
    She-Hulk

    Other, less well-known options:

    Black Cat
    Dazzler
    Electra
    Ms. Marvel
    Valkyrie
    Hellcat
    Clea

I'm really trying to second-guess what Mego might have done and am interested in your input.

    Thanks!
WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.

I gotta go with Spider-Woman for sure.

I thought She-Hulk was created in 80 something

      She-Hulk (Feb 1980)

      Black Cat (July 1979)

      Electra (Jan 1978)

These characters were too "fresh" back during the Mego day and weren't proven characters that Mego would have gambled on.

I would assume they would have gone with ones who had been around for a bit longer. They may have taken the lead from the Marvel Fireside book "The Superhero Women" and would have more than likely been:

      Wasp
      Black Widow
      Ms. Marvel
      Spider-Woman
      Medusa

      or, wishful thinking, Red Sonja

        Oops!! Forgot the Wasp!!

I really like her, but would she have made it through the Mego merchandising melee?

BK, Wiki dates She-Hulk's first appearance as 1980, but maybe she became popular later in FF?

Yeah, Red Sonja would've been a great complement to Conan...

I didn't know of that book Anthony, but I def. like Ms. Marvel at the expense of She-Hulk.

Medusa is a much better foe choice than Enchantress, I think.

I think this is as good a reference as any for the highest profile females of that era.

The Cat (who would soon morph into Tigra and her costume would go to Patsy Walker)
Shanna the She Devil and Lyra of the Femizons also appear in this volume.

Red Sonja makes sense as a female counterpart to Conan, although I would think the Bikini would be a tricky sell, even with a "flesh" suit.

^ I'm astonished that this vol. includes Hela but not Scarlet Witch!?!?

Thats an interesting green suit for Medusa, new to me.

                    Whats' the copyright date?

^ The book is from 1977.

As for Scarlet Witch, in the back Stan Lee mentions a proposed 2nd volume and it would have included Spider-Woman, Scarlet Witch, Storm, Phoenix, etc.

Right now, my dream Gals are:

                          Scarlet Witch
                          Wasp
                          Black Widow
                          Spider-Woman

& possibly Ms. Marvel (2nd costume), Medusa (was trying to keep it to four, though.)

Interesting thoughts . . . Given what Marvel was up to and Mego was doing back then, I'd think:

                            - Black Widow (had been getting cover billing on Daredevil similar to the Falcon on Captain America - plus a simple suit easy to screen print or accessorize)

                            - Spider-Woman (had her own title and TV show on the horizon and had an easily screen-printed suit)

                            - Ms. Marvel (had her own title and some trendy feminist appeal with "Ms." and a costume with lines not unlike the Catwoman Mego already made)

                            - Red Sonja (again, had her own title and Conan was big at the time --as to the amount of skin -- see WW's costume)

I think Dazzler would have been more likely to end up a 12" fashion-type doll -- Marvel was positioning to push her hard back then, with a movie and LP deal ready to go . . . when it all fell apart, the way I understand, they shoehorned her into X-Men to try to get her to launch at least in comics. With everything they were trying to make come together, a fashion doll ala all their celebrity dolls, seems a likely direction for her to me.

1977. Were there any significant stories at that point that really spotlighted the Scarlet Witch that could have been included in this volume?

Medusa's was from her Amazing Spiderman appearance. The invisible Girl story was the return of the Mole Man where she first started using invisible force fields. They used the first appearance of The Wasp.
