I like both, but I think had Mego continued that the figures would have become more realistic and detailed over time. If you look at the TV based lines Mego produced, most of the sculpts are very accurate representations of the actors they depict, Like the 12" Buck Rogers stuff which also had fantastic detailed costumes too.

I could NOT have said it better myself!
Color me preferring realistic style.
I've never really been too thrilled with the limited range of poseability of standard MEGO 8 inch figures or their strange lack of consistent scale to each other.
Now, I'm 42 years old. I'm an "old timer' when it comes to MEGO. And I can tell you, I had these issues with MEGO figures even when i was a little kid growing up in Brooklyn in the 1970's.
"Why can't my Superman do the fists on hips "hero pose"?" "Why is Robin the same height as Batman". Why doesn't Robin's vest tunic have the yellow laces?" "Why is (supposedly 7 foot tall) HULK actually shorter than everyone else in the line?" "Why do Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, and Isis all have the same face? And why do all the women have huge mis-shapen heads?"
These were the questions I asked as a 7 year old in 1974.
For me, it just doesn't make much sense to customize MEGO's to actually feature these silly limitations.Last edited by darklord1967; Mar 25, '10, 7:01 PM.I... am an action figure customizerComment

I usually try to keep it Megoesque or anything in that ranking. I figure an average 6 foot guy in Mego form would be the 8 inches. So bigger guys like Juggernaut, Hulk and Rhino I have Frankensteined some Hulk movie figures to make them.
But for normal sized guys, I prefer the Mego type body. Sure it is nice to have a figure that looked like it jumped out of a comic book, but I'd prefer something that is kid-friendly and easy for my daughter to play with. This is a Mego Forum after all and most of us started making customs because Mego quit making figures and the line was picked up by the imagination of customizers.More custom Mego madness on Facebook right here...

A well-executed custom figure is cool no matter the style.
I think of it like comic book artists. I appreciate Kirby and Adams and Lee and Reis.
The same with all the great customizers on this forum and elsewhere.
I appreciate the guys who have worked hard to develop a style. With most of the more prolific customizers, I can tell who made it just by looking. I'm sure most you can, too.
There's nothing more fun that to look at the finished custom thread and see something cool.
I'm mostly envious of all the talent that's out there.Comment

wow ... big thanks for the kind words.
I have come to the Conclusion that the Term "Megoesque" is more so an Opinionated Referance ..., that only a few Have ever fully been able to Achieve...., in reguards as to where the Masses Direct the Term.
The True Definition of what I actually think it Means ..., is an 8inch Cloth figure. This is what I Believe Defines Megoesque ..., after being in the Hobby for 6 yrs or so ..., and seeing the Evolution of Toy Companies products on the Shelf today ..., as a whole, compaired to those of yester year.Last edited by BlackKnight; Mar 25, '10, 9:12 PM.... I like this thread. First I think it should be Classic style Mego and Modern Mego. Mego is the base medium. I love the classic Mego style of the 70's originals. But come on... Take a look at figures like Reed and Sue Richards. The Mego line was evolving. Like as was pointed out earlier in this post. The TV sculpts add to this fact. What I really love is those customs that copy the original style so well that it could fool people into believing it was a lost 70's Mego. To sum it up. You can customize a Batman anyway you want and it will be cool. But there is only one classic Mego Batman.Comment

I like Megoesque, with maybe just a touch more detail.
But the "deluxe" customs of many here are a real inspiration to me!WANTED: Dick Grayson SI trousers; gray AJ Mustang horse; vintage RC Batman (Bruce Wayne) head; minty Wolfman tights; mint Black Knight sword; minty Launcelot boots; Lion Rock (pale) Dracula & Mummy heads; Lion Rock Franky squared boots; Wayne Foundation blue furniture; Flash Gordon/Ming (10") unbroken holsters; CHiPs gloved arms; POTA T2 tan body; CTVT/vintage Friar Tuck robes, BBP TZ Burgess Meredith glasses.Comment

I think what matters most to me is being true to the character. Sometimes that means you can keep them 70's Mego, or other times super detailed masterpiece. Its a good medium for both.
Batman, for example, has been different things at different times which is why you can make a 60's West Batman or a dark Batman Dead End and be correct with both. (which is why I love the character so much)
I love the customs forum because everyone who participates in making figures inspires me creatively. There are some that I look at and wonder if these guys are doing that for a living and if not, they should be. :DComment

The only reason I collect "Megoesque" figures
or, if that's not an accurate term...then maybe "What Would Mego Do" type
figures is because I like to have a consistency with my old Mego figures
----stuff that is MARVEL or DC that I can display side by side
as if they were all made in the 70s/80s by Mego for their WGSH line...
does that mean I don't like hyper-detail on custom 8 inch figures?
...the answer: A resounding "NO".
Yeah...
Some I like better than others---usually I'd want them for my
collection if they are heavily-detailed/modernized but, even so,
I can't hang with much customizer stylization...I mean, they
have to have a real "comicboook" look for me to "get into them"...
Or just do what T-bolt does and wipe the slate clean and totally
redesign their suits...I find that much more satisfying than something
familliar but not very true to the comics."No. No no no no no no. You done got me talkin' politics. I didn't wanna'. Like I said y'all, I'm just happy to be alive. I think I'll scoot over here right by this winda', let this beautiful carriage rock me to sleep, and dream about how lucky I am." - Chris MannixComment
