A couple of things: a kilt is only pleated in the back, and it should only come down to his knees. Great start, though.

Cool, I like it. I'd probably want mine with the sash/shawl (the long piece thrown over the shoulder).

The plaid The kilt and the piece over the shoulder are all one long piece of fabric.

Aw crap. I actually meant to do it that way, but I got going ironing those pleats, and kind of forgot to stop. I know it's a little long - I had mentioned that I had to hem it up. Depending on what kind of fabric I use, I could probably just use Fray-check so the bottom doesn't get bulky.

I tried to explain it that way. I should have mentioned that it would just require a longer piece of fabric, and the unpleated end is what gets worn over the shoulder. I was getting sleepy last night.

I had an idea that I'd need a kilt for. So I'm going to look for fabric and make a more accurate one. If anyone wants one or help making one, let me know.

Dunno if this is too old school,
but there already technically IS a mego kilt,
                    albeit a 6 inch one.

If you want to go beyond that, I am sure there are dolls you can kitbash.
                    Cheers,

Big Jim had a camping shirt that might provide enough of the material for what you want. In the early 1990's we would use that with soldier ape boots and a fonzie jacket to make punk dolls.
                      Cheers,

How big were the Big Jim figures? Those boots are really nice. I don't think that shirt would have enough fabric to make a Mego kilt, once you put the pleats in the back, especially if you do the one that gets draped over the shoulder.

I have that Big Jim shirt in my clothes bag. It's too small to make a decent kilt out of, as you guessed. I did however find this today at work:
HPIM0281 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
A plaid shirt, with a design that works great for my needs, on the clearance rack for $5.50!
