11. Planet of the Apes

Based on both the movie series and the mid-70's TV show, this was a beautiful line of figures, rich in detail and playability. Numerous accessories and playsets make this as equally popular as the larger Star Trek and Super hero lines. Due to continued rumors of a new POTA film, these figures are more popular than ever with collectors, and their scarcity is evident.

One detail to note about the Apes figures is that all the Ape characters have new, hairy hands. The grip is the same as normal hands, but the Ape versions have hair sculpted on the back. These hands were also used for Star Trek's Gorn, the Super hero Falcon, and the Wizard of Oz's Wicked Witch (Zira hands, in green)

Two costume variations exist, and are both hard to come by. Later run figures of both Cornelius and Zira came with brown shirts. The brown tops often went with the green bottoms.

Two often asked questions relate to the confusion of identities. The first is between General Urko and General Ursus. When the animated Planet of the Apes show was on TV, the names of the two generals were switched. Mego then re-issued the old figures with the reversed names to match the TV series. Urko became Ursus, and vice versa. For the record, General Urko is the figure with the purple pants and the helmet molded onto his head. Ursus is the gorilla dressed the same as the soldier ape.

The second is the matter of Galen and Cornelius. Both figures are identical to each other, with the only difference being body type. Cornelius, Type I body, came first, and was played in the movies by Roddy McDowell. Later, McDowell played the character Galen on the TV show. When the Galen figure was released, Mego was using the new, Type II bodies. Confused? Yeah, well so are we.

The only vehicle for this line was a Starsky and Hutch's famous red Grand Torino car.

14. Star Trek

An impressive line based on the world famous TV show. These figures were released during the time of the animated show, and some of the aliens came from that series. Some of the designs were good, but others, like the Mugato, were way off the mark. Again, remember that the male crew had black boots built in as the lower leg. Available only on cards, the original crew came with either Type I or Type II bodies.

The first series, consisting of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, and the Klingon came on cards featuring artwork of the 5 characters. When Uhura was added, the artwork was modified and her picture added to the montage.

When the 2nd and 3rd series aliens were released, each wave had it's own newly designed card. Both had similar, alien planetscapes, but the 3rd series cards a littler taller.

Lastly, a warehouse find on the Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Klingon made these figures extremely common, and are often available at comic book stores through Diamond Previews.

15. Teen Titans

This is one of the harder lines to complete. Only 7" tall, they reflect the youthful stature of the characters. The Titan line represented a major change in the way Mego made gloves. These were soft plastic, and looked better than any other attempt. However, for a character like Speedy, the gloves make it impossible for him to realistically hold his bow. Wondergirl is the worst of the four, with a too large face, and bland plastic arms with no joints. Released in 1976, they weren't on the retail shelves very long. These were only available carded.

Aqualad

Soft blue boots and gloves, flesh colored, blue and red unitard with a sticker on the belt.

Kid Flash

Soft yellow boots with wings on the side, soft red gloves, red and yellow unitard with an embossed red flash on the chest.

Wondergirl

Soft plastic blue boots with heels, red unitard decorated with gold and blue stars, gold belt and yellow necklace.

16. Waltons

Gee, another line based on a TV show. Just imagine the youthful glee of the happy youngster ripping open a birthday present hoping for a superhero and ending up with John Boy. These were first released in boxed two-packs, but towards the end some were released solo. The two packs were John Boy/Ellen; Mom/Pop, and Grandma/Grandpa.
