Dr Mego: please make painted versions of your heads.

I've asked this directly at the site email address, but haven't had any reply.

Dr Mego does a very varied range of repro heads, 99% of them are unpainted.

Now, while I used to paint 15mm and 25mm miniatures as a teenager, I haven't done any painting as an adult apart from decorating rooms.

Useful, but not conducive to developing the skills and techniques to painting action figure heads.

So, wouldn't it be an idea to have painted versions of the extensive range of heads you stock? I can think of a few (Peter Burke, black Action Jackson, Little John, Starsky) that I would snap up if they were offered pre-painted.

Classic TV Toys have started to do this, but to be honest their ranges aren't as wide as yours.

    What do you think?

These are resin heads. Not the vinyl heads. He sells many painted vinyl heads. The resin heads are pretty much available unpainted. These are pretty easy to paint especially if you have experience painting lead gaming minis. There are afew members who will paint for you as well. The lowest cost for on demand painting I have seen is 10 bucks on top of the cost of the head. That's the least I would charge for a simple paint job.

Thanks for that: the site doesn't state which are vinyl heads and which are resin.

My preference is for vinyl heads.

I agree. I think Paul should paint each of those heads individually. ;-)

I'm new to this, and while some heads state that they're hand cast others don't.

Also, as I said earlier the site doesn't state that any of the heads are resin. If you're not already in the know, then asking this kind of question isn't stupid.

          Wish I hadn't bothered, now.

            It's a good question. Scousebadger.

I know some on Doc Mego's site are resin . I would assume that heads of existing Mego characters (WGSH, knights, etc.) are vinyl? Is that right? If so, some seem to be painted and some aren't. For example, the Tex Willer head is painted. Not saying Doc needs to do anyting differently just checking what's available.

I too would be interested in more painted vinyl heads. I like what CTVT has done by offering more haircolor options. Would love if they or Dr. Mego would offer more of the vinyl repro heads painted with different color options.

              Thank you, Silveralex!

I have investigated CTVT. Their ranges aren't as broad as Dr Mego, but having painted options of what they do have is VERY attractive to a newbie like me.

The only issues for me are: a) there are a number of head sculpts I want that CTVT just don't do and b) as I live in the UK CTVT will not allow me to place an order unless it's for at least $35.00 (plus shipping). Which is over the UK customs charges threshold for items purchased from the US. And while I do want clothing and some heads and accessories from CTVT, there's only so much I want at this present time.

give headpainting a shot, I did Gundam models and lead miniatures before I got into customs and had no problem transitioning to this. A lot of the wash and dry brush techniques can be applied here, too.

Here's a pretty good rule of thumb about the heads on Doc Megos site:

Vinyl heads are painted. Resin heads are not painted.

The vinyl heads are factory made and painted in bulk at the factory. Doc pours the resin heads on his own.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

My post was a fun jab at Paul, not you. Sorry about that.

Thanks for that. I appreciate the clarification.

I understand that producing vinyl heads aren't cheap, but is a pity that there aren't more painted rotocast heads available.

This is kind of a time related complaint. Sure there could be MORE rotocast painted vinyl heads available, but seen from my perspective of a member and customizer here since 2001, there is a huge number of these heads available. Between the vintage heads from Mego LJN and Paco and the new heads from CTVT, Castaway, Doc Mego and others, there has never ever been MORE choices and availability.
