Hey Doc, How can I dye these shorts???

    Hey Doc Mego!

I have been trying to dye a pair of your white shorts with no luck.

I have prewashed them by hand... no good.
Threw them in with our laundry... no good.

And this evening I soaked them in bleach water, then washed them by hand, and rinsed thoroughly...

    Dyeing them again right now.

So far they barely take any color, when dyed, even overnight.
They looked black until I rinsed them, and then all the color rinses out.

    HELP!!!

Did you put salt in the dye?

What color are you dyeing them?

      I did put salt.
I am trying to dye them black in order to complete a figure without having to order a new black pair. The white ones were just laying around in my spare parts.
I know that I got them from you, and you always say they are dyeable.

Try boiling the water. I have dyed several jumpsuits from Doc with no problem. I would get the water boiling and leave the shorts in the dye for about 5 - 10 mins. That should do it.

I've had problems with Rit dye working at all lately an things that I've used it for in the past. I think they may have changed the formulation. I used to be able to dye DC9 hands and feet with no problem but now it doesn't work to good.

Funny you'd mention that - I noticed the same thing a couple weekends ago. I couldn't get the dye to "stick" no matter how long I boiled it.

It's not just you guys. I tried dying a white (DRM) jumpsuit 5 different times a particular blue for a Black Manta (1966 cartoon version) custom and couldn't get the dye to stick. I soaked the suit in dishwashing detergent, added salt and used boiling water. I eventually painted it.

I even tried dyeing a blue jumpsuit a deeper blue and that didn't work.

The one thing I didn't try was that RIT DYE that strips the color out of the fabric.

The DRM purple vest I dyed (a deeper purple) turned out perfect.

                  What am I doing wrong? I'm dyeing ova-here. ;p

                    Boiling water

I do add boiling water to the dye. The first time, I dyed them along with a Mego Batsuit, and the Mego suit took the dye and the DM shorts didn't.
I have tried three more times, and each time the dye just rinses off.

This last time I put the shorts in a pot on the stove, with boiling water, salt, and RITT black dye.
Here is how they turned out.

They are kind of dirty gray, like old dingy underwear! Ha ha!

If Ritt has indeed alter their product - that will make things harder.

Barrett - I will mail you out a pair of black shorts on Monday.

THe liquid Rit is definitely different, never use the powder as its too messy and in FLA the humidity is not its friend when stored.

I used the powder I had on hand to dye the bulk bodies green and it worked fine. I went to get more and all they had was the liquid. Used the whole bottle on one body and it did nothing. That was the first time for me so I have nothing to compare it to.

But the question is, does the powder work better than the liquid or have they changed something all together?

The liquid used to work for me just as well as the powder.

                              Hey Doc,
I will gladly pay for the shorts!
I was just dyeing the white ones cuz I was in a hurry to complete this figure as it was part of a trade with another member on this forum.
I figured I'll just dye the shorts and get the figure in the mail, no waiting.
It didn't work that way though.
                              Thanks!
