How can Mattel create crossover appeal with Girls and Doll Collectors?

I understand that Wonder Woman Barbies have been quite popular with the Doll collectors, not to mention the high end Tonner Dolls.

So now Doc Mego has specifically hired a woman to sculpt Cheetah and Wonder Woman (and Darkseid!). WW will have rooted hair.

However, she will undoubtably end up in the "boys" section of Toys R Us along with the other "Action Figures" rather than alongside the "Dolls" in the "girls" section.

Anyone else think that Mattel is missing an opportunity here for a "DC Princesses" type of doll line along the lines of the Disney Princesses? Repackaging her in variant outfits like dresses or the jeans and tank took that Wonder Girl wears these days. Or even just having a boxset with multiple dresses and clothes.

I see that as a possibility , but maybe as a repackaged exclusive to TRU. As Long as this is a Retro Action Figure or packaged that way it will remain with the rest on the pegs. I do see parents who have both Boys and Girls buying these for their kids and that probably how these will end up in girls hands. Although girls do tend to like to play with boys toys too so who really knows. I can see the main females like Supergirl, Batgirl, and wonder Woman being repackaged with various outfits and maybe slightly altered from the RA versions as either TRU or Target Exclusives. Then I can see these in the girls isles. Your suggestion about a DC princesses ( Super Queens 2011 ? ) line is a great idea !

      Hmmmm....

I think it all depends on subject matter. Use the same bodies and do "Twilight;" instant wave of 14 year old girls clamouring for Mego-esque figures.

      *shudder*

I find the Twilight figures kind of funny because they do no seem to know what to do with them. Walmart has wisely put the Twilight Action Figures in the "girls" section next to the dolls, but I've seem them in the "boys" sections in some places as well. Specific middle of the aisle and endcap displays which is probably better to for both gender kids/fans.

You really answered your own question. I think the Barbie line is being used to expose girls to this license. I imagine the Retro Heroes will have smaller volumes of the girl heroes for this reason.

            The appeal is already there

My 4 year old neice likes playing with the Retro Superman and was very excited seeing the picture of the Wave 3 Wonder Woman from the San Diego Comic Con. She has since demanded that I buy that for her for her birthday.

However, her number one request is SUPERGIRL with Streaky.
