Personally I think if they don't capitalize on the big budget movie to push the format further into the mainstream it would be a HUGE mistake. My thinking being that considering the nature of toy marketing with movies, a full line of "Retro" styled figures based on the movie would be wonderful because:

1: It would make them a mass market item to be sold at all retailers and not just Toys R Us which would lead to...

2: Larger production numbers= lower production cost. And then of course....

3: If the movie is a hit and the "retro style" toys take off... kids will be more inclined to get on board with the other Retro style lines out there.

To me that was and is the beauty of Mego figures... The Duke boys could share in an adventure with Superman seamlessly (just like they did in Smallville, sorry Hector) or you could swap out accessories and expand the adventures.

Thinking about that last point, I have still got to customize a set of Wizard of Oz Super Friends like in the episode where Mxyzlpitk put Superman and the crew in the land of OZ. Thanks to the uniform scale I can.

In the end though I can't stress enough how important I believe it is for Mattel to make the movie figures in this format and perhaps who ever ends up with the Avengers license will follow suit and then everyone will be happy again as the Marvel and DC universes play together in scale.

That's a good point. It would be great if kids who liked the film got into the 8" scale because of figures based on the film. When I was a kid, I wanted Star Wars figures because I liked the movie...even though they weren't in scale with my Megos. Once I had the Star Wars figures, they could have adventures with all of the other figures in that scale.

With that said, I don't think as many kids today play with action figures as in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, so I don't know if the scenario would actually work out that way, but who knows?!

As for my personal opinion about Green Lantern movie figures; I wouldn't have any interest in them. I think it's cool that they're making the exclusives for people who DO like them, but I've already got the Green Lantern that I wanted as a kid and a Sinestro who looks like he did with The Legion of Doom, so personally, I'm all set.
Nostalgia just ain’t what it used to be.

Me too buddy, me too. One character representation is sufficient..there's simply far too many other DC characters that could and need to be made before we start emulating every other Super Hero toy line that's been out with 15 different Batmans, 12 different Green Lanterns, and 5 Supermans or whatever. In fact, if you go back to some of the early threads on these Mattel figures here from months ago: you'll see I mentioned this as being exactly what I hoped wouldn't happen to this line. In my example I used Superman Red and Blue back then. Everyone pretty much replied with "No, they won't do that..." or the like. Well now with duplicate characters already being announced this early in the line, it's looking like my early concerns about this line are coming to fruition. But I'm with you generic, there's no way in hell I will be buying the Guy Gardner or juiced-up Sinestro. I have a Green Lantern and Sinestro. If the line continues to do this, I will stop buying the series all together. All this announcement did for me is confirm that the completist that I am is going to have to accept yet another incomplete collection because of poor character selections that I refuse to buy....again...just like most every post-1985 Super Hero line. They should have been two different popular characters instead...maybe even a couple alter egos or something, that were chosen as exclusives, they would sell far better than these rehash GL characters will in my humble opinion. I need another GL or Sinestro figure in my Mattel Retro collection as much as I needed "Solar Suit Superman", "Deep Dive Batman", or "Tide Racer Robin" 10 years ago. Duping charcters annoyed me back then and it still annoys me now (regardless whether it's Hal or Guy...it is still another Green Lantern.)
No thanks Mattel, I'll pass. I'll put money on it right now that we WILL see another Batman and pehaps another Superman sometime down the road...I now can almost guarantee this will happen at some point in the future and sadly, I'll be shocked if it doesn't happen sooner rather than later. A shame really as I was hoping to finally have a Super Hero line to collect where I'd actually buy every figure made. But my worst fears for this line have started to become a reality already before Wave 2 even hits the shelves. Of course, this is but merely one man's humble opinion here which means nothing to Mattel or anyone else in the grand scheme of things...

I have no philosophical problem with making figures from the Green Lantern movie. I consider "Retro Action" to refer more to the style than the subject matter (although it is great when it works for both). So why not capitalize on the popularity?

However, in practice, I have a hard time imagining that the Ryan Reynolds version will be different enough from the figure already produced to justify it.

No. I'd rather they focus on giving me as much a complete DC Universe as possible.

I'd buy them, and love to have them, but not at the expense of spaces in the current DC Retro Action line, which may be finite. I'd hope we could get them separate from the Retro Action DC hero waves, and also hope they'd show up in stores rather than as limited exposure exclusives. There are too many other DC characters Mego never made to fill slots with flash-in-the pan movie figures.

Going by the history of DC movies lately, Green Lantern will most probably be a flop.

If Retro does figures for it, they'll trash/taint the entire line.

Agreed and you know what? If they put these on some kind of different card and didn't make them part of the "Retro" line, I might think differently about them. I realize that it's probably the style of figures they are referring to with the "Retro" moniker on the packaging but I just can't get my head around how characters from a 2011 movie have anything to do with "retro." Whatever the technical reason is for the line's name, I personally assumed it meant that these were homage to Mego...not just in body style, but the whole glorious Mego era. Apparently I am wrong and it's bitterly disappointing that the creative geniouses behind these figures have wasted their talents on modern characters in a retro line. I just can't make sense of the rationale...especially since I am pretty sure there's not a whole lot of people who wouldn't have been thrilled with maybe a Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne exclusive or something. But Guy Garnder Green Lantern? Just an awful choice and a terrible character that is nowhere near as popular as the traditional Hal Jordan Green Lantern for 70s enthusiasts...which presumably is the target audience that a Megoesque line is geared towards. I'll forever be baffled by this decision and I suspect Mattel will be baffled by the lack of sales on these character choices. Only time will tell and perhaps I am dead wrong...but reading through this thread and some others here, it seems A LOT of people who were supporting this line thus far by buying these figures will be skipping these exclusives. That's not a good trend to start so early in the line with Wave 2 barely at retail as I write this. Just a colossal mistake in my opinion.

I haven't bought a modern movie superhero figure since Batman Forever. I would buy an 8" Movie GL for my son though.

To clarify, my opinion comes from the stand point of the 8' format not the Retro Action line. If everyone really wants to see the folks with the Marvel license to follow suit there will have to be a mass market success to justify the change up. To only have the Retro Actions available at TRU's that's a limited distribution outlet. If they got the 8' inchers into Wal-Mart's, Target's etc... it will have a better shot at making a foot hold in the action figure toy market.

Marvel will NEVER make Mego style figures (even if the Retro's are a hit) because they pride themselves on being new and cutting edge... even if that sux 9 times out of 10.

It's always been what distinguishes them from DC.

Their idea of Retro Heroes was Famous Covers ...

That's the closest to a Mego figure Marvel will ever do, imo
