Opened a Superman today... Warning, bummer!

Since my local comic shop got them in, I figured I'd pick up a spare Supes to open.

To be blunt, very, very disappointing. Mattel really dropped the ball on the body of this thing. You know that hunched over look they have in the package? When I try to straighten it out a little bit, it snaps back into that hunched over position because it's strung so tightly.

The costume fabric just feels too thin to me, too. I haven't had snag problems, yet, but I can see where others may have.

It's a real shame, because I like Doc Mego and I know how hard he's worked to get us to this point, but I don't think I can continue to buy these things until they work out the problems with the body, the costume fabric, and the packaging bubbles dripping whatever chemical goo it is.

I was very enthusiastic about this line, but now that it's reality, I kind of wish it hadn't happened, because it's pretty clear after opening one of these that Mattel has very lax standards when it comes to design. I just cannot imagine someone holding this in their hand and thinking "This body's great! Let's go with it!"

i've opened 4 so far and a couple are really loose with the other two standing fine. that being said...even considering body issues and packaging oil i am so glad this line happened.

      Thanks for the info, Steve

I've been debating whether I wanna get one for a long time and this post pretty much settled the matter.

I blow over a lot of reviews because it seems most people are usually over enthused or under enthused about the fact they are being released - which I think clouds peoples minds a bit when reviewing the figure itself.

People are afraid to just come out and say ... "this is a peice of junk"

It took me 5 minutes to put mine on a Doc Mego body, and it was worth it. (But I didn't do it for Superman because there is only one Mego Superman as far as I'm concerned) It's too bad, because average folks won't know to do that, and they shouldn't have to.

I want to say that even though I wish the legs and back were better on the Mattel body, my kids could care less. Supes, GA and Lex are getting much playtime.
              It's all good!

I have already said this but if you look over the figure before you buy it you can tell if the body is strung badly....I have bought 7 figures already and all of them stand just fine...they all don't have the same tension in the body...some are tighter, some are looser but it doesn't hurt the pose-ability....as far as the fabric for the costumes...sure it could have been better...I don't think Mattel realized how delicate it is...I'm sure they know now.

Yeap! You nailed it! Would anybody here tell me how to get a mint Mego Superman cheaper than that? Not even kit bashing from our well known vendors... Even buying MATTEL'S retro figures to kit bash into a better figure, would be a smart and cheaper investment...

I have only opened GA so far and he did not have that problem. I did notice the Superman I saw in the store looked kind of odd but as I was buying GL and Sinestro that day did not give it much thought. These latter two seam okay in their package and I am still debating whether to open them or not

I bought Sinestro yesterday, and he was much looser than the GA and Lex I have. I may have to try that trick from Action Figure Insider. Thanks Scott!!!

Overall, I would say that Retro Heroes get an A for effort, but a B- in execution. I know Doc, Dave, and many others here worked very hard on them, and the love shows. I think quality control at Mattel left quite a bit to be desired though. Hopefully, moving forward, such issues will be addressed. Mattel seems to have a hit-or-miss problem with toy design. From the godawful 6" scale Batmobile (that barely rolls and constantly falls apart) they made when they first got the DC license, to the awesome Brave and Bold transforming Batmobile, they've run the gamut of toy design. I think this line got the short stick for now.

But, still, at $20 for a cloth-costumed figure of this size, it's not a bad deal, when retailers are expecting $9 for a JLU figure these days.
