Restringing EMCE

I love EMCE, but...

The factory stringing is very tight--It interferes with the poseablility and, more importantly, distorts the softer plastic used for the upper arms.

So, what is the best way to restring EMCE bodies?

(I tried vintage hooks & bands--too loose.) Should I use elastic? I'm not keen on that.


Need some advice as I plan to replace Mattel bodies. Thanks!

Sometimes the person in China hooking up the body twisted up the rubber bands
which puts tension on the shoulder loop. Turning the arms counterclockwise a
few turns will lessen the tension.

Most if not all my EMCE's have shoulder problems, usually the left one for some reason. Either it won't rotate, or the torso cracks and it sucks up inside. So far its Khan, Andorian, Graveyard Zombie, Chekov, and Sulu

It's sad when a new product cracks, breaks right out of the box, shows little pretooling when ito it, or perhaps the company making it cares more for the maoney, and amount made then the quality of their product.
As for Mattel, I do not accept, that they are working the bugs out of the body, they could have worked out the bugs first and then released the figures, we have waited nearly 30yrs for new figures, a year more would not have hurt any.

Between Apes , Trek and loose bodies, I've bought literally hundreds of the EMCE bodies. Except for the first few years, when the loose bodies were the only thing available, I havent had any troubles with the too tight elastics issues, or cracking bodies. Except for the odd Trek figure with two left arms, or legs (2 figures in total), I havent had any issues. Not sure if its just luck, or the quality really improving, but I cant complain.

I think I may be missing a couple tiny pieces, should I just disregard all the metal clamps & hooks and get some elastic string and try to reassemble these?

Well, I was able to restring one nice and tight from a video on restringing type-one's, but now I cant get the head back on.... :(

EDIT - I removed the Romulan head and can't get it back on. I restrung the Andorian with the head intact and was able to do so effectively. But, dang, I can't get Mr. Romulans head back in - any tricks/suggestions?

Microwave some water, dip the heads in for a few seconds with some tongs, then while they're still very warm and squishy gently work them back into the neck holes. Be careful of the hot water.

Hmmmm....

Another good trick for getting heads on.... and a holdover from the garage kit era.... is to use a hairdryer with medium heat to soften them up.
