Okay so I got my new Retro Lex in on Friday. Considering all the pros and cons (and it seems to be more of the later) everyone's been going on about I figured I'd offer up my thoughts on the new Mego's, for what they're worth...
1. I like his look- He really fits in nicely with my real megos. You can hate all day long but scale, costume and sculpt wise, he looks great next to Mego Superman. Plus having a hunk of Kryptonite is fun.
2. The thighs are too thick- His legs do appear to be as if they were made for a different figure. My wife made reference to how the thunder thigh aspect reminded her of the old "Teela" action figures from the original MOTU line. Perhaps Mattel has a thing for juicy legs? Still not too noticeable when displayed out of the package.
3. The stringing seems a little iffy- Mine stands fine and poses well but I can tell with prolonged play (and probably not much) the body will get loose.
So in conclusion...
I really put some thought in on this. Loving the originals as I do I almost felt like a traitor buying one of these "new" Megos. However my analytical spin doctor mind kicked in and rationed that for $19.99 MSRP these are a fair deal. You figure the value of a 1975 dollar to today's cash and there isn't much difference in price. Also if you've ever bought or built a custom you know the price ends up normally being way more than the $19.99. So in the end...
1. No they are not MEGO's- Not better. Not worse (well maybe the legs).
2. Yes they match up well next to the original's as far as look and scale. The MSRP is a fair price even if the limited distribution at retail kinda sucks.
3. The new never before released as an original WGSH character is worth picking up. I don't really care for the "replacements" such as the new Superman. I'm perfectly happy with the old. However if your a completest that's an extra $20 a pop to have a complete set.
And there you have it. My thoughts for whatever they are worth. Hopefully they can help you make a better educated buying decision.
