I think Tron 2 is going to be a big hit. Tron would be a great grab for EMCE because the figures could be pretty plain and all the work would be in the suits which is probably a lot cheaper than molding a ton of new body pieces.
That said, I doubt it'll happen but I think the market WILL be there, though probably isn't at the moment.
Why wouldn't it be? The trailers have been epic and the fanboys seem up in arms about it. Given the power of Disney now and all the CGI craziness they can do, yeah I'm guessing it'll turn into a pretty big hit.
I think it will be a huge hit. I have seen some existing footage and it is incredible. It's a different audience today and these kids were not around when the original came out and have no connection to that party of critics who hated it. Plus this film has taken on cult status over the years and has developed a rather sizable following. I think a new version will bring the original concept full circle to what it's creators originally envisioned (but clearly didn't have the technology to do back in '81).
Hmmmm.... I think the big stumbling block for suspension of disbelief is that most people know how a computer works these days, so it'll be more of a stretch to get them to think it's all little people living inside of it. (That; and how many folks are gonna think it's a "Reboot" rip?) But it's definitely not the worst idea to come down the pike (I'm looking at YOU; asteroids) so there's definitely hope.

They didn't literally physically live inside the computer. Tron predicted cyberspace. The digital world.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
I've shown the movie to my 9 year old daughter who is very tech savvy and loves it. I explained to her the history of it and understood.
Then I showed her the trailer to new Tron coming out and she was amazed and is now on board with waiting to see the movie.
Don't underestimate the popular of this movie. It does have a huge cult following and when it played here in Seattle at the IMAX theatre in Seattle Center, it sold out almost all showings. Apparently people of all ages were in line.
It maybe a new generation but they still are children out there that would find it interesting even if older kids think it's bunk.
Amazing how much Disney characters and movies are popular among new gen children yes?
The trailer that is out now was made for Comic Con. It is only the teaser trailer. I work for Disney and have had the opportunity to see the actual trailer. I am a huge fan of TRON and I can say that this movie is going to blow people's F-ing minds. Disney is also going to do a TRON animated series from the new movie. The movie is coming out December the 17th 2010.

Kinda. The people in the computer were programs. It was how a lot of Cyberpunk writers portrayed cyberspace: the big tanks would be security programs, the worker types would be data processing programs.... How a cyberdeck's programs are represented and anthropomorphised so the runner could interact with them. (Otherwise they'd be too complicated fopr a human to operate.)
>it sold out almost all showings.
I think it's popular, even though it doesn't get a lot of hype. (Yet.) It's one of them things people sort of discovered for themselves.
What division of Disney do you work in? They are our major client for content production. They send us all their trailers, clips, interviews and promos for digital production. I haven't worked with the movie side for a while, mostly the music arena so I'll have to check to see if we got it in our DB.

Well, I'll put it like this, I put together large events for Disney. I do all different types and sizes of events fro Disney. Quite recently, I did a 3 day event for Disney Consumer Products. They basically pitch all of the up and comming movies as well as merchandise to different companies who do their consumer products. Lets take Mattel for example, they make dolls for Disney. TRON was a very big showcase for these peolpe. They showed the trailer that was almost completed. They showed the entire trailer but some of the scenes were still missing some special effects because the movie is not done. Disney had armored guards in the room to protect the trailor. They also talked about the toys to come out as well as all of the computer games and the animated series. I also had to opportunity to see the lifesize lightcycle model they made. It was good times!
