I remember reading that Maxx Steel was an updated or at least a poor concieved update of Big Jim.

In fact it was heavily implied in the cartoon that Maxx Steel was the son of the original Big Jim from the P.A.C.K. In fact Maxx Steel's dad was named "Big Jim" and a flashback episode showed his likeness to be exactly like the Big Jim figure.

And to wrapped things up in a nice bow... Big Jim's lazervette was used as Barbie's corvette, as were the Big Jim camper and airplane. And what about Big Jim's iconic muscle flexing arms? Why, they just so happen to be Sport & Shave Ken's arms!

As you can see, Mattel keeps it all in the family!

I'd pay good money for a Hasselhoff Mego.

Does anyone know if these costumes will be removable like the Megos were (w/clips) or Non-removable like the Hasbro 9" DC line?

                removeable

They will be removeable - with actual boots, not colored feet.

I recently read that Max Steel is the number one boys toy in Latin America, and has been since he showed up in 99'. The Big Jim as his father bit is further enhanced by the fact that Big Jim was sold under the name Kid Acero, which translates to Kid Steel (according to wikipedia anyway).

As for the new Mattel bodies....I hope they arent based completely (if at all) on the Steel bodies, otherwise they would be pretty much the same as Hunter Dan.
