Compare-and-Contrast 8″ WGSH: Vintage Mego & Modern Mattel
I like the new head. That being said, GA had THE best DC head of the original Mego lot (except maybe Kid Flash), and I loved his long beard and long sideburns. GA actually had those in the comics. He was an ultra-liberal hippie in the 70s!
I'm glad they are keeping some sideburns. Even JLU kept GA's feathery hair and sideburns. The shorter beard does look a bit better, maybe Mego did over-exaggerate it. The white eyes look better, and match the comic. The pupils on the white-eyed guys did bug me as a kid, although I never had GA until I was an adult.
But don't be dissin' that original GA head too hard! It's one of Mego's finest (even if they did Recycle Long John Silver).
I agree. It's great to see Ben back blogging. I regret I didn't get in there early on when he was having discussions about each figure when the blog was initially up. Life got very busy and I felt like I missed out on alot of sharing there. Ben I hope you bring some of those topics back up on the vintage figures. I would love to post my reflections and childhood experiences. I think you would enjoy.
As much as I like the new, updated Mattel versions - there will always be something about Green Arrow that stands out from the rest of the line. Mego went with the slick, '70's (was it) Neal Adams costume instead of the original, '60's dated look. All the other characters had a definite dated, '60's - or in Batman and Robin's case Golden Age or '50's look. Batman smiling? Green Arrow looked like he jumped right off the page of an issue of JL of A! of the Megos I had, he was my favorite. Even now, in these pictures - he still looks sharp! (How come he's not paired up with a rogue - even somebody like The Key?)
Very nice GA head and I agree with all the changes. But I don't think they could do anything that would make us love the original head sculpts any less, no matter who they update.
Glad this has brought you out of retirement Benjamin!!
sigpic WANTED: Boxed, Carded and Kresge Carded WGSH
I honestly think Mego molded the Batman head after Adam West. If you look at the general features (ear length, chin, smile, and even the eyes) they are very much indicative of the television show. As a kid I remember trading a RC Batman for one of those because I thought he looked like Adam, so I think that was the intent.
For me it was a great sculpt to begin with. I remember when i got him. I thought then he was one of the best put together Megos. The Alterations are minor and only make him better. Defo a must have!

Again, great to see you blogging Benjamin!

I felt the same way with Iron Man. Someone please tell Hasbro they need to jump on board.
