EMCE Apes Score !

I dropped in to my LCS today intending just to pick up the new "Wednesday Comics", and lo and behold, there were Cornelius and a Soldier Ape hanging on the action figure wall! I was a big POTA fan as a kid, and still have all my original Mego Apes. I was aware these had been released, but had never seen them in person.
My initial reaction was to think to myself "Hey dummy, here's a chance to buy Mego-like POTA figures at retail, grab them!" I figured they'd be $15-20 each, but to my surprise, they were marked $5.99 ! I thought it had to be a mistake, and they were probably intended to be $15.99, but no, they actually rang up for $5.99 ! If only they would have had Zira and Zaius too, and a couple dozen Soldier Apes!
So, anyway, was this line unpopular? Star Trek has generated 15 or so figures, but I take it the Apes line has stalled? It would have been nice to see Ursus, Urko, and maybe the astronauts. Were the Soldier Apes all identical in dark blue, or were there variations ?

They had to be a mistake. FAO made the same issue and after people called asking if the price was correct they reviewed it and raised the discount price to the $9.99 it's at now. Some got em for $5 I believe before they were changed back. I guarantee they were supposed to be $15.99 and someone goofed. When you stumble on something like that you simply buy em all and smile as you cash out. Never alert anyone to the issue. Just makes em realize something is wrong. Buy em all and slap the extras on ebay or in the marketplace. Worst case you end up getting the ones you wanted for free in the end. Unfortunately I don't think Apes were as popular as Trek. That doesn't really surprise me though. I think they came out when the economy was just starting to decline and people had to choose how their collecting dollars were to be spent and Trek won out. They had new figures and characters which I'm sure influenced people as well. I guess the fact that Diamond chose to produce the 4 Apes figures they did shows that the Trek line had some success. At least enough for them to consider another property. Which is good news. I think the current economic state and the way it's affecting many of Diamond's retailers is going to make them cautious about what they produce right now. Once things stabalize I'm sure they'll look at their options a little differently. Small retailers, like comic stores, have been hit fairly hard by the current state and I'm sure Diamond sees that too. Congrats on the great score.

I just sold an extra EMCE soldier, Cornelius and Zaius on ebay and the high bidder got the lot for $15.50. I expected them to go higher, but I guess the interest is way down. Sorry Commander, I guess I should have offered them here first.

I knew that but I'm used EMCE Soldier Ape to dye the vinyl gray tunic and the gloves to match Mego Silver Soldier Ape.

Follow-up: I went back to the LCS today, and they had another Cornelius and Soldier Ape hanging on the wall, still ticketed at $5.99 each. I grabbed the Soldier Ape and took it to the register, and asked if they had any others. "One more Soldier Ape in the back, I think" was the reply. A couple minutes later, I was the owner of 2 more Soldier Apes for the grand sum of $12.82 ! I checked the receipt, they were scanned in and rang up for $5.99 each, so the price couldn't have been a mistake; they must've gotten them on closeout somehow.

Lucky! I intended to buy at least 12 Soldiers, but with the economy and a whole pile of personal tragedies, I only have one.
