I'm sure someone else, in another forum, has probably already discuss this (I can't believe I'm the first.) So, feel free to ignore this post if you've already come across something like this elsewhere.

I just felt like I had to say something.
Seriously, though, I love these new figures and I have no intention of sending any back.

I couldn't agree more. Can you tell me what size o-ring you are buying?
I did buy some awhile back but for the life of me I cannot remember what size they are(in mm if possible).

Thanks actjac01, I'll go look into that stringing business and the tips you pointed out. I have never restrung a Mego. I may try to make a Thelin tonight or this weekend by transplanting a head onto an older Spock, but I should also wash all those auction guys I got... and you wash the Trek uniforms also. The Gold trim doesn't get destroyed? Clarify that for me please.

      Thank you for the tips.

        Mmm..Gentlemen,
Hi, the self-professed restring king for Mego's,Emce's and a few Castawaytoys bodies here. I always go with round cord elastic string.; never use that O-ring thingy. Jessica can attest to my restringing style, when i sent her two restrung Emce heads (attached to the body) for repainting, she thought it was a new Emce Body style. I had a previous thread i posted on restringing (my style) a few months ago. Here's (3) Emce bodies showing full lateral and horizontal ROM w/the arms. Not too tight ,not too loose... everything moved just right! Ivaniski

Yes, I will confess I have spoken to Ivaniski and before I get into trying to restring anything I am most likely going to ask him to do one or two and maybe even teach me how he does it. Those pix are awesome.

I have not forgotten you Ivaniski. I may contact you soon as I'm working on 3 customs at the moment.

Someone said this elsewhere but I guess the Andorian is based on the Cartoon because he is NOT BLUE. My Andorian is Pale Grey. All 3 of them. Pretty much dead on with Thelin
              http://www.startrek.com/imageuploads...in/320x240.jpg

You know, I thought these guys were more blue, but according to this photo, apparently not
File:Shras2267.jpg - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki

So nevermind! I will make one of my 3 a Thelin unless someone did a Thelin sculpt. LMK if someone did.

Ok, while setting up that photo of the Andorian Welcoming Committee, I noticed that the Phasers don't snap into the hands Either. But they do snap into the older Mego hands.

I noticed the Emce hands on the one Scott I opened are much more rubbery and pliable than the older Mego hands.

I wanted to suggest "Kung-Fu Grip" on Mego remakes but not like this. These hands are shaped liked Megos but are softer and thus the Phaser won't snap in place or stay in place.

Is this also a non-issue for the collectors who don't play with these like I do?

WoW! I just got my Andorian out to make Thelin and he is HEAVY! I mean he weights a lot more than my Original Spock. But I was afraid I would not be able to get his gloves and boots off, but I did.

However, his left hand got squished in the glove. But I don't want to open another one and try it. But I LIKE this body. I may weigh it on a food scale later. It is also pretty tightly strung. Thelin coming soon.

The ones I picked up from my local Home Depot are DANCO brand #10 O-Ring.
This is the size: 11/16" Outer Diameter, 1/2 " Inner Diameter, 3/32" thickness.
                    (In metric: 18mm O.D., 12mm I.D., 3mm thick)
I like this O-Ring size because it's really strong (have yet to break one, and I've deliberately tried to)
and I like the tension it gives the figure, especially the EMCE.
Of course, you can get the next size up (#11, or even 12) and see which you prefer.

I've encountered no ill affects washing the original mego tunics, especially on the gold trim (when there's some terrible stain, I'll hand wash the tunic with SPRAY N WASH stain treatment, even letting it soak in that over night!)

From what I can tell, and I'm looking right now at an original gold stripe I've salvaged from a really neglected tunic, it looks like some type of white nylon trim material with a metallic gold side, but I don't think it's mylar...although it could be.

Anyway, I've had no problems with these stripes at all. Real sturdy stuff!
I wished that's what they made the original emblems with.
What I remember bugging me the most was how the silver part
of the emblem would curl up on it's own
& practically blow away in the wind.
                    Most annoying.

                    I wonder what they're
                    using on the new
                    Retro tunics?

I remember seeing those pictures before, of course I don't remember where, and I believe my first thought was... oh, he's using a couple of those Castaway bodys, but these are restrung EMCE bodys!?!

Sir, please point me to that thread. I got some reading to do!

Thanks actjac01, I have some WASHING to do!! I have some tunics so stained they are unuseable so I have nothing to lose, this will be cool if they come clean.

Can you PM me or post your washing process here? You spray them and let them sit? Then what? Soak them in a mild woolite or just anti-bacterial soap? Scrub them a bit? Let them sit for a while? How long? Then you soak them in plain water to "rinse" them? I guess I want details on what you mean by "hand wash" and soaking. Just so I follow the same steps.

I may have to try this on Sunday when I'm out working on my fence. They can be soaking while I'm doing home repairs. That will keep my wife happy with me.

Thanks for this tip, I'm looking forward to employing it.

OH, washing Original Mego clothes should be a How To on the TipsNTricks section of CustoMego!

I know, long ago, I read that it was difficult or impossible to wash those. that may have been 5years ago or longer. I remember someone saying how they didn't like having dirty, old, used uniforms... but they were afraid to wash them.

                          It's washing day!

                          Okay, here's my basic technique
(I use this on clothes and bodies):

1-I get the water running as comfortably hot as my hands can stand,
then I run the water over the fabric, getting it all wet.
(Sometimes if I have a few items, I may fill up my sink first and dunk
                          everything in.)

2-I pump my favorite foaming anti-bacterial hand soap right onto the fabric
and start working that in. Why this particular type of soap? It's my favorite
type of hand soap so since it's already sitting there, that's what I grab
(I know, 'typical male'.) I figure any type of mild hand soap should do or
                          laundry detergent (like WOOLITE.)

3-Once I'm satisfied the piece is about as foamed up and as soapy as
possible, I rinse it off under cold water, getting all of the soap out.

4-Now I start squeezing the water out with my hands, but I don't twist the
fabric up. The trick here is not to ring the water out, just hand squeeze it.

5-To get more of the water out, I take my favorite bath towel (how'd you
know I was a bachelor?) I open the towel up on the bathroom counter and
lay the piece FLAT out on the towel, then fold some of the towel over the
top of the piece (so that the piece is 'sandwich' between towel) and start
hand pressing more water out. When that section of towel has become
pretty saturated with water, I move the piece to a dry section of the towel
and press some more. I keep doing this until I'm satisfied I've got as
much of the water out as I can, or I've run out of dry towel or I'm
just done with this part. You'd be surprised how quickly this little
technique speeds up the drying time. Then I set the piece aside to dry
                          more on it's own.

6-(optional) Sometimes I'll use a hair dryer on a low setting on the fabric
because..., well..., sometimes I just can't wait!

That's the basic technique I use on ALL the clothes. I mean, they are clothes,
even though they're made for action figures so they're tiny, but they're still clothes.

                          Now, about those STAINS....

Before I go on, I have to correct something from my previous post.
It's not Spray N Wash that I use.
                          I actually use SHOUT.
So how much to use and how long?
Well, I just followed the directions on the bottle. SERIOUSLY.
(These are just tiny clothes, right?)

Sometimes, I'll use the above hand washing technique first, to see how well that does, then use the SHOUT. Other times, I might start with the SHOUT first (spray the fabric, thoroughly soaking it, work it in by hand, rub the fabric with itself over the stain area, etc.) then proceed with the hand washing. I got the idea of the overnight soak right from back label on the bottle of SHOUT.

So, I haven't actually used SPRAY N WASH or WOOLITE yet. When I do, I'll just follow the manufacturer's suggestions on the bottle.

This is another product I have used, and it's doing alot better on a Spock Mego tunic than I thought it would. The product is FOLEX. It's a carpet stain remover. It does such an amazing job on my carpet, I said, "What the hey."
It's actually got a lot of what looks like 30 year old grease out of this tunic. I'll probably try it again to see just how clean I can really get it.
If you're interested, the website is: http://www.folex.net

And when I want to really get a head clean, especially dirt that's buried itself into small crevices (like the Neptunian head): an old toothbrush all foamed up with my trusty handsoap.

You think maybe I should invest in a tiny wooden wash tub?
Can't you just see Mr. Spock, stripped down to his blue undies and black boots, sittin' in one of those things with his little knees drawn up around his face while I'm hold one of his arms straight up, scrubbin' his underarms with my old toothbrush, with a dollop of foaming soap sittin' right on top of his head?
"...You can capture the Klingon & bring him back to the Enterprise!"

Dude, you killed me. I almost choked laughing at that!

And thank you for the instructions. I will see what I can do with this tomorrow, with pix perhaps. I have a FILTHY Spock shirt that is, well a picture will save me 1000 words and I'll need 1000 words.

I am just paranoid because someone once told me they couldn't wash the clothes.

I guess the Triangular "Delta" Badges are toasted/missing but the rank is fine.

I am going to try to make those emblems or buy them from ThatBatmanGuy so I have no sentiment for the originals.

Thank you, really. I hope to post some results tomorrow about how all this goes for me while I fix my fence and dress a Klingon. And sell stuff on eBay, and get ready for next week.... arrrghhh!

P.S. Get a pic of that Spock bath. If I have a small "basin" I'll do one myself.

                              Good Luck with this, Paul.
And don't be afraid to 'dive right in', especially with those stained tunics you've written off.

                                Thanks actjac01,

I'm Doug by the way... but it just now occurs to me that I've never "restrung" a Mego so I guess I'll have to do that before I clean one of the bodies...

And I have no use, much, for the nasty costumes, except to clean them up so they won't be dirty. I agree with you that they are just clothes. Hopefully I'll have a few pix tonight.

                                Thanks!
