    Castaway Phantom and Redbeard Review

From Castaway Phantom and Redbeard Review - Laser Mego

Today I was happy to find a box from Castaway Toys waiting for me. Inside was an 8" version of Captain Action as The Phantom and Dr. Eville as Redbeard. These figure were original solicited in the Fall of 2009, but due to manufacturing problem have only now been delivered.

The packaging is very nice and they come with the collector friendly re-sealable clams. Due to the delay in manufacturing, Castaway had sent Captain Action much earlier, without the Phantom mask. The box today contained the Phantom mask, Dr. Eville figure and the Redbeard mask. You could probably get Captain action back into the clam with the Phantom mask on, but it would be pretty tough to close the clam with the Redbeard mask on Dr. Eville due to his huge beard in front and ponytail in back.

The packaging cards are gorgeous with glorious colorful artwork. The card backs are truly stunning.

The Phantom mask slips easily onto the Captain Action head. It looks a bit oversized as a head, but that is probably unavoidable. I wish the skin tone of the mask was a little darker to better match the body and hands.

The costume is very nice and well put together. I don't have my other Phantom on hand to compare, but the guns are very nice and shiny. The guns slip into the ring bestowed hands perfectly. It would have been nice if some non-trigger hands were included as the trigger hand look silly without the guns in them, but that is very minor and may have raised the cost of the figure.

The Dr. Eville figure is great. The costume is very detailed and is put together nicely. All of the snaps are covered up, so he looks good from any angle, yet the clothes are removable. The accessory are appropriate and work well. The sword slips into and out-of the scabbard easily and he can hold the gun without a problem. This time the head and hands have matching skin tone, but the body is darker. It would be nice if Castaway could have used the lighter skin tone body to match the hand and head, but with the long sleeves and collar, it isn't much of an issue.

Once you put the Redbeard mask on, this figure because awesome! I can't get over how great the Redbeard mask looks. Because of the thrusting beard, the mask doesn't suffer from looking oversized as the Phantom mask does.

At first I had trouble getting the mask on, but I heated it up in boiling water for a few seconds, dried it off, and it slipped right on.

As nice as the Captain Action Phantom figure is, Redbeard really steals the show. It may be the nicest figure Castaway has produced, and they have done a lot of great figures.

Castaway is sold out of these figures, which is a shame as I bet a lot more people would be interested in them now that people have gotten their hands on them. They were definitely worth the wait.

They look really cool, Dr. Eville as Redbeard is creepy without the mask on.

Red beard looks fantastic, definately the better of the two.Just out of interest what is the connection between the two characters phantom/beard ? Also wouldnt it be better if Dr. eville was blue?

Just noticed, a nice added touch with the sword/belt/shirt, much nicer than the proto.

Wow. Those look fantastic. Consider yourself in an elite class of collectors. I wish there were a way to get those. Very nice. Well done Castaway!

In 1664, Redbeard was the leader of all pirates in Sanloi, when the Phantom came there to challenge him. First, the Phantom had to defeat Redbeard's closest men - Big Bart, Salla and Crusher, before he was allowed to fight Redbeard. After a long duel that raged through Sanloi, Redbeard was defeated and the Phantom was the new leader of the pirates. The Phantom picked 100 of the pirates to form the Jungle Patrol and made Redbeard the first Colonel.

Thanks for the review. The mask size was a bit tricky in this scale. The masks have to be a certain thickness during the manufacturing. Mask for action figures are much better suited for 1/6 action figures.

We'll talk to the liscense holders and see if we can put some more of these guys out in the future in some form.

We didn't make Dr. Eville blue because when he is redbeard he'd have blue hands and a blue head peeking out from under the mask. We put some blue around the eyes to remind everyone who he was.

Wow, these turned out great! Glad to see them out and about. I know Jason and David worked really hard on these, and it shows.

I had a blast doing the packaging artwork. The Phantom's pose is based on the original Phantom pose from the Ideal Phantom costume package by the great Murphy Anderson.

For Redbeard Jason said he wanted him to come across as one bad dude, pistol blazing, sword singing. It was fun to figure out how to make him look like a gonzo, scurvy pirate. I'm particularly fond of the old sea-dog now.

Chris knocked it out of the park with the card art.

The masks aren't inside the clamshell with the figures. They're bagged in small bags inside the big white bag.

                          Thank you CAW!

I too had to put the masks in boiling water to get them soft enough to put on the figures but they look great!
I could not fit CA back in the clamshell with the mask on so now he and Redbeard are on a shelf with my Mego Superman and Aquaman!
I hope CAW will be able to do other characters for CA and DE in the future!
I'm really glad I have these!
And yes- great artwork by Chris! I reversed the backer card in the clamshell and now both are hanging on my wall!

Question for the Castaway guys - I got my Cap Phantom a while ago, and just recieved Redbeard last night - but no masks. I never got the Phantom Mask and my Redbeard had accessories no mask.

                            Are they coming later?

I packed the masks seperately and stuck them in the bag outside of the clamshells. If you still have the package please check again or let us know and we'll get you some more out.
