    Marvel Signature figures

I saw these at WalMart a couple of year ago and was tempted to put them up, but just spent $$ on all of the Famous Covers line.
I assume these did not do so well, hence their quick disappearance.

Correct. The figures themselves however, are light years ahead of the Famous Covers. The Captain America in particular is a really well done figure, and the Signature Series Doc Ock is IMO the definitive version of the character in toy form.

I think this series would have done a lot better if sold through comic shops, but the retail market was oversaturated with them, and Hasbro launched four lines simultaneously. Signature Series, Titanium Series, Spider-man Origins, and Marvel Legends. They were in essence competing with themselves.

I think the series started off doing very well, but then got bogged down in duplication with too many Spider-man variants. Target was also not a very good vendor for the line. They started abandoning the series almost from the get go. That dramatically altered the investment Hasbro had made in the format with a substantial decrease in production. So instead of Hasbro trying to build in new vendors, they abandoned the format altogether. It was a very good line though and the quality of the figures were excellent.

I have a few of these...I dont care for them. Their scale feels weird to me, and their suits arent removeable.

I wonder if the person that I'll be gifting for the 'Secret Santa' would want them?

I agree with you about Doc Ock - he is killer. You can have one (The best in the line in my humble opinion) for $20 shipped!

DR OCK ORIGINS SIGNATURE SERIES FIGURE DR OCTOPUS - eBay (item 200548062575 end time Dec-26-10 20:33:25 PST)

          (not MY auction)

          Take care -

I think the scale issues are overblown. A well made figure is a well made figure. One inch either way doesn't kill a line. Hasbro has always been very deliberate about how they market and merchandise their lines, just as you see Mattel doing with the Retro Action figures. The overhead on these figures are considerably higher than a four or six inch plastic figure with a very limited paint job. Target is tough to do business with and will not let product sit for any length of time unless there is an upfront agreement (as with movie licensing and Star Wars goodies). Target folded on this project early. The Retro Action line never would have succeeded had they gone through Target. Where TRU will let product sit on shelves literally for a year with the same price tag, Target will begin marking down after a month and will continue the discounting every week there after until the item is gone. Honestly I don't know if there is enough market demand to sell these figures at Walmarts and Targets. I think limited commercial shelf availability and online distribution is the best fit for this format.
