So everyone seems focused on what licenses and figures Mego will make moving forward after the Target exclusivity ends. I am more interested in where I can buy Megos moving forward than which Megos will be made. There has been a certain level of frustration and consternation with Target's roll out of the waves to be sure, but I am willing to look past that as growing pains (maybe because I have been able to get everything I want via Target online or in store for Wave 1 and 2 so far, and am willing to be patient with Wave 3's rollout), and look to the future.
The town I live in has several of the larger major box retailers in the region (2 Wal*Marts, a Kohl's, Meijer's) but no Target. The Target in town was one of the Targets that was closed a handful of years ago when they culled the poorer performing stored. There are a number of Target's within a 30-45 minute drive though, but it's still not a convenient way to shop for Megos or any mass market product (I really dislike exclusives to particular retailers but understand why they are common in the current market environment).
I am not here to ask what will happen-I don't expect anyone to provide answers to that question-but I am curious to see what people would like to see happen.
For me:
-I would like to see them stay a mass market product, not an online only niche product.
-I'd like to see them available at more retailers-Wal*Mart, Meijer's, Kohls, Walgreens, Kroger, etc. pretty much any retailer who carries toys to any significant degree-a true mass market product available at multiple retailers not one limited to a single outlet
-possibly have the Megos available through Diamond to be sold in comic shops and other pop culture stores with Diamond accounts as well.
-a Mego subscription service or Patron club; a way for those who choose to prepay for figures or waves directly to Mego and receive the figures when they ship. Limit it to one subscription per household so anyone wanting multiple still has to support Mego's retail partners and prevent scalpers from loading up on releases. These would not be variants, special editions, etc. just the regular figures available directly from Mego to those among the customer base who want to support Mego directly.
-availability outside the US (I am in the US, this one isn't about me, but about what I see as being needed for a healthy market for Mego moving forward). Price points could vary especially if a middle man got involved to distribute Mego outside the US, but having a reliable source to get Megos for international customers that isn't ebay scalpers would make the overall market for Megos stronger in my estimation. It could be a spinoff of the above Patron Club or subscription service, but then shipping costs for Mego and/or the customer come into play.
-I would NOT necessarily want to see Mego run its own online store though. Mego is a manufacturer, not a retailer. Different infrastructures, different skill sets, and different focus. Any resources Mego allocates to selling to customers are resources not available to be allocated to making Megos. Mego is a small start up company and has limited human resources and capital resources. I would rather see those resources focused on the manufacturing side and acquiring licenses than spent on setting up everything needed to be a retailer, hiring sales staff to run the sales side, etc. etc. This applies to selling parts and pieces as well (as much as the budding customizer in me would like to see that), it's a diversion form the main focus of the company. If an offshoot or another start up wants to buy pieces in bulk form Mego to resell with such a site, great, Mego could still focus on production and let someone else handle sales.
I hope Mego has a bright future and that I can find Megos any and everywhere I shop in 2019. What would y'all like to see?
