DC Universe Wave 3 - MC review link and discussion (hopefully!)

DC Universe series 3 action figures - Another Pop Culture Collectible Review by Michael Crawford, Captain Toy

The above is a link to Michael Crawford's review for
the DC Universe Wave 3 figures:
Robin, Deathstroke, Green Lantern, Sinestro and Nightwing
    (with Grundy BAF)

I'm gonna give up on hinting I might ever start buying into a DC or Marvel line

because it looks like it's not happening any time soon and I don't
wanna be the Fanboy Who Cried Wolf!

I have my custom DC and Marvel Mego figures and at the same time have
been delving into STAR WARS and INDY figures so it's too much for my budget lately

    but

the reason I'm posting this is because I just looked at Crawford's review
for Wave 3 of these figures here---and although he hasn't made that big
of a stink over it and neither have you guys---

the selection for collectors that like the Bronze Age "plus" character renditions
is kinda going "over the top" with the addition of this third wave for
    this particular series---don't ya think?

Like I mean, the series on a whole is reallllllllly sweet looking now, I was thinking.

Do you guys think I'm like this because I haven't bought a DC figure in
years and have never bought any cool figures from DC Direct before?

Am I just blinded by pretty pictures or is this line with all the cool characters
    rendered nicely a great collection?

Any comment sor observations are appreciated.

Soooo nice. I have TONs of DC Direct figures. I have figures of each of these characters. But for some reason, I'm really jazzed about this wave. I wish Mattel would work out their paint issues, because it's mucking up some fantastic sculpts. But other than that, these are finally the type of DC figures fans have been wanting at retail for a good decade at least.

I actually found Green Lantern tonight at Target on the way home from work. He was the only one left and I was just there Tuesday night when they had nothing. I don't really care which Sinestro or Deathstroke I get, as long as I can find a complete set.

I'm still missing the classic Aquaman with the green gloves and black shorts from wave 2. Haven't seen it yet (and not sure I will now). I also have yet to see the 2nd Firestorm as well, but will probably pass anyway as Ronnie will always be Firestorm to me.

I really like this line of figures. Like Chris said 95% of the ones scheduled for release this year have been done by DC Direct already. But there are no consistencies since the figures come from different lines. Having the Four Horsemen sculpt all of these is icing on the cake, at least for me. The paint ops could use some work but I'll take them. I like the fact they all come with accessories, unlike a lot of the DC Direct figures. Plus the BAF's are fun and an extra bonus.

I found the short haired aquaman at my local Wal-Mart earlier around 11 p.m. I also picked up firestorm. Man figures are going up in price. I still want to get the green lantern, batman, red tornado, orion, robin, and penguin, sinestro figures.

I have Batman fron this line ans I'm looking forward to picking up more. The Robin and GL for sure. I'd like Superman and the pix I saw of Shazam and Hawkman look sweet so I definitely plan on geting those 2....assuming I find them.

I think you nailed it Scott. DCD's inconsistent look, and worse, scale is a problem. These Mattel figures really have the feel of larger Super Powers figures with the consistent look to them. They are even more in-line together than the Marvel Legends, which are sculpted by different sculptors (including the 4H).

I picked up Wave 2 a few weeks back, all but Aquaman (either one). I don't really care to have the new Firestorm either, but I need the classic Aquaman!

Did you see the size of that BAF Grundy? Talk about added value!!!

I like this wave a lot. But I already have these characters. The only one I really want is the Nightwing, because the only nice one in his current costume was from the Hush line, and I have them displayed together. This one is so much nicer and articulated than the older one Mattel made. I might pick up the Robin and swap out some of his parts with the Andy Kubert one I already have. There are details I like about both. But I have so many DCD figures and other lines that I collect, that I can't just go out and buy duplicate characters because these have an extra point of articulation or two. However, they're great for people who missed out on some of the earlier DCD versions, or never got into them at all. Plus, making them available in stores like Target gets them into the hands of kids or people who don't always get to the comic book stores.

there's scale problems with this set as far as I'm concerned. The Sinestro is half a head shorter than Green Lantern. I believe his body is the same one used on Robin. I like the fact that Robin's not the same size as the adult characters, but Sinestro shouldn't be a dwarf.

I personally think that most of these mattel DC sculpts stink. I may be biased, since I am a Superman collector first and foremost and their first Superman sculpted by the overrated Four Horsemen looked like a crackhead head on a 'roidfreak body. It looks like it's getting better, but I just don't like my Superheroes that freaky looking. I may just stick with DCD stuff. That stuff is usually nice to look at.

I got really lucky when wave 2 came out and found them all at one Target. This 3rd wave has been really frustrating. I haven't found any yet, in the Detroit area. I know one guy who sold me his extra GL, but he is a scalper. He bought 4 whole sets at various Targets, then listed them on ebay. Going by what he just sold with his 1st set, he made atleast $6 per figure. I went and preordered from one of the online retailers for wave 4. I can't complain about him too bad though, he sold me an extra SDDC Lobo for the $25 he paid for it. Although at this rate, I may have to sell it to get the other wave 3figures I need.

On the design side, I am loving these figures. And really like the mix of figures, released and coming soon. Can't wait for Hawkman.
