    >we were producing and drilling for more domestic oil during the 70's and 80's.

Hmmmm.... I suspect there's a little more to it. What bothers me with the price of gas started after Katrina; when the gas companies were boo-hooing that they'd have to charge more 'cos a high percentage of their production facilities were taken out by the hurricane. That year they posted record profits for any industry on Earth, EVER! You'd think that increasing prices to compensate for new expenses (like repairs to the facilities) would have LOWERED overall profits.

Seems a lot like the Enron thing; that they realize they can increase price by increasing demand, by lowering production. Which also lowers expenses, and increases profits. So I think there's a certain amount of gouging going on as well.

No it was not. I graduated High School in 1980. I had a 75' Camaro in 81.
Gas was $1 or just above that.

That may be true. Without turning political, 20 of the last 28 years was Republican Presidents also. My question again is, how come gas went up 300% in the last 8 years. Nothing else has gone up 300%. My morgage didnt, my pay didnt. Only oil and oil related products or things transported.

Sorry Russ, it never happened in NJ of the USA.
IN 1981 I was 19 years old. I lived with my parents and worked a Black & Decker in Cherry Hill NJ, about 20 miles each way. I drove a worked up 1975 Camaro and made around $6.00 an hour. $10 used to damn near fill my tank.

                        from u.s.a today

VIENNA (Reuters) — U.S. retail gasoline prices set another recored and matched the inflation-adjusted peak reached in 1981, the government said Monday, as concern about low supplies pushed up pump prices.
The average price for regular unleaded gasoline soared 11.5 cents the past week to a fresh record of $3.22 a gallon, according to the federal Energy Information Administration's nationwide survey of 800 service stations.

The much larger AAA Fuel Gauge survey of up to 85,000 self-serve stations said the national average for regular gasoline stood at $3.196 a gallon Sunday.

TThe latest EIA pump price equals the all-time high gasoline price in March 1981, when a gallon cost the equivalent of $3.22 in today's dollars. Prices then were pushed up as war broke out between Iran and Iraq.
