Your thoughts on metallic paint for animated figures?

I've always felt the use of metallic gold or silver paint on animated figures looks out of place and makes them less screen accurate, since those colors are always represented in animation by grey for silver or yellow/tan for gold.

    What are your thoughts?

Generally, I have to agree with you. I'm a former fine art student; when I got deeper into my art work specializing in replication, the 'right' tone or hue is for what I always strive. Moreover, I still think (to my own eye) the " right " shine of gold or silver highlights still make me smile...it can indicidualize the final piece; and if I use silver or gold to accent a bucket, button or detail, it has to be perfectly shiny to catch the light.

If it's an item that is supposed to be metallic in the animated series...maybe. If not, then NO. It's usually an excuse to throw a repaint out there, and it doesn't match the look of any animated series.

It depends, sometimes we get the best of both worlds with figures: gray or shiny metallic /yellow or gold offerings and the consumer can decide which they like better.
In the case of the Vinyl Vixens I thought the metallic painted version looked better on Wonder Woman, but I don't think I'm always swayed to that preference every time.

I am never happy with Silver Surfer figures unless they are shiny and metallic looking. Especially the awesome line from Toy Biz that tied in with the animated series.

but also the one for the FF animated line.

              and especially the 10"

I also think the Toy Biz Silver Samurai is one of the nicest figures from the earlier X-Men line

and Iron Man! how could we not love shiny Iron Man stuff?

A lot of it will depend on what you want the figure to represent. There is a lot of debate about this sort of thing in the Japanese Robot community. For Anime accuracy you generally want white, grey or fairly dull silver. But a lot of the newer toys and figures are often homaging the old school Godaiken and Chogokin toys of the 70's and 80's which used tons of chrome and metalics. I've ultimately come to accept whatever looks good, believable and character appropriate, and not worry about it too much beyond that.
