Michael Crawford's review of the NEW Captain Action!!
Thanks for posting the review. Not as crazy about the body as I thought I was going to be. The proportions seem off. His feet and fisted hands are way small. And there's something off around the head and neck area. His head seems to be seated low on the skinny neck they gave him. And the broad shoulders and muscular forearms, contrast oddly with his skinny legs, which is further accentuated with the overly thick boots. I hate to say it, but he kind of looks like a 12 inch Retro action figure. I do like the coffin box they have added. Although it sort of negates the rest of the packaging. This idea seems to be inspired by what Hasbro did with the 40th anniversary sets. I'll be interested to see how the hero outfits look on him. I think that will really make it or break it for me.
How tall are the other figures in the bottom two photos? He seems to about the same height as Indy, but the other two figures tower over him. Are they 12" or 13"?
I'm just curious because he looks a little short.
I'm impressed with the articulation, however. There's way more than I expected.

I think they struck a perfect balance with the body. It's gotta be muscular enough for Captain America or Thor, but skinny enough to look good as Spider-Man or Loki too. Not easy to pull off. I also think it's his outfit stretching across his neck area that makes his head seem to sit low. DC Direct had the same issue with some of their 13" figures. The only real solution to that is to give everyone turtleneck outfits. I do wish the outfit had snaps on the back though...not a fan of velcro.

That's why I'm waiting to see his review of CA dressed as Spidey and Cap before I make a final decision to commit. Ultimately that is what I would buy him for anyway. And like you said, that is not easy to pull off. So if those work, I'll be getting them immediately. It will be hard to deny my collection a Romita style Spider-man! Or for that matter a Kirby inspired Cap. BTW, I checked some other forums from the link Michael Crawford provided in his review. Captain Action enterprises states these should be on TRU shelves by mid-March, which is this week. Understandably their keeping more of a presence on the 1/6th scale forums than they are here.
My first reaction to that pic was that he looks like he's getting ready to break into a dance routine. My second reaction was that his laser gun reminds me of the SNL skit Will Ferrell did with the tiny cell phone.
Wow, I really hate this figure. They've taken what was great about the original Captain Action and completely walked away from it IMO. CA had an extremely realistic headsculpt and proportions, much more so than the 60's GI Joe, and this just looks like a cartoon to me, even if the eyes do have better paint apps. CA was my first 1/6 scale figure (Christmas 1966,) and this is a huge disappointment. The accessories and packaging are the only plus in what was a "must have" for me, but has now turned into a "get on clearance if I see it cheap" figure.
Here's what Captain Action should look like:
I know the Cap folks are on these boards, and I hope some of these problems can be addressed for subsequent releases.
I don't mind the sculpt at all. The neckline feels a little odd to me, but the original was bulky and awkward too. The legs do seem a little slim, like he worked his upper body only, but I'll hold judgment until I see him in the other costumes. It may well be a good happy medium. Gotta fix the sleeve length though.
I think the figure looks good. It just needs better action shots to show off the updated articulation. The reviewer really dropped the ball on the pics, in my opinion. Very stiff and awkward poses.
I also would have liked to have seen him by GI Joes and previous CA figures for comparision. Cap is going to look out of place by Sideshow style figures.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
