My oldest son and I have established a tradition of hitting the flea markets on Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Today was a DUD. The weather was cold and drizzly the past couple of days, so I kinda expected this. I snagged a knock-off Lego set yesterday as a consolation prize in case we struck out today, which we did. I feel like a heel, as the set I bought is basically crap. The brand is Best-Lock, which is a misnomer as the blocks barely lock at all.
We sat down to put the set together, and I needed to use a knife to remove flashing before some of the pieces would even connect. The designs were poorly engineered, and I'm thinking the best thing to do is pitch them before they contaminate his real Legos.
I collected all of the LOTR Lego-like sets when they first came out a few years ago, and thought they were fine. I also have a set of the Batman vehicles and playsets put out by Art Asylum that seem OK to me. But I've talked to Lego purists who basically say that if it's not Lego it's junk. Is there a middle ground somewhere? The Best-Lock stuff leave a lot to be desired, but I'm hoping there are some acceptable alternatives out there.
