    Marvel Select Thing

Finally got around to reviewing this guy. I've had him for a while, but never bothered to do anything with him until now. He's big, he's huge and he's damn heavy. Does that make him a good figure? Well we're about to find out! As an added bonus, I think he goes well with Megos. I never much cared for the Mego Thing... But this Thing can stand with your other Mego FF and look massive, as he should.

For those looking for a scale shot. Ignore the fact that Kirk has no pants.

That is the most disturbing size comparison shot I have ever seen!

I gotta give it up for this line - Thanos, Juggernaut, Hulk, Abomination and the Thing are in PERFECT scale with Megos. Hulk and Abomination are nice and BIG, and look great when placed against Megos.
"It's sad that governments are chiefed by the double tongues. There is iron in your words of death for all Comanche to see, and so there is iron in your words of life. No signed paper can hold the iron. It must come from men. The words of Ten Bears carries the same iron of life and death. It is good that warriors such as we meet in the struggle of life... or death. It shall be life."

Great review! An interesting figure too. I didn't know he was out there. I don't collect too many in this line simply because the packaging is such a space killer. But I might have to make an exception with this one. Great post!

Is there a "no pant leg" "no boots" version?
It's a great "classic familliar" sculpt and all... but I'm just curious
what great sculpted figures are out there that most resemble the
              Bronze Age versions I remember.

No. From their last Q&A, they don't have plans to make the other versions at this time either.

Thanks. Eventually I'd like some Marvel characters to display
alongside my DCUC figures that evoke the Bronze Age "look"...
I know there are many from the Marvel Legends that'll do nicely, but maybe some of these newer "Select" figures'll do the job too...
even if The Thing isn't one of them.

For me this was an easy PASS. What artist is this based on? The Marvel Legends version seems to be based a little bit on Byrne. This looks like it was designed by Immomen, Turner or Jiminez. Not exactly your typical THING artists. Why is he wearing pants and boots? Is it cheaper than figuring out a plate pattern for his bare legs and feet?

The proportions are outta' whack from what I can see and the head is also too small as you observed. If they're going to do a deluxe version of the THING why not refer to Kirby's art, Byrne's art, Arthur Adams' art or Weringo's art and deliver the real goods? Byrne did a really great pin-up in the `80's called How To Draw The Thing!" and I think it would serve as a guide for anyone sculpting him too. Any version based on those artists would be fantastic sculpted in 3D.

Shouldn't his pants have rock texture pattern because he has rocky legs underneath?

Best I can tell it's based on the Steven McNiven Thing. Obviously it's not a straight take on that, but fairly close.

As for the pants, yeah, uh, Thing pretty much wears pants now. Especially in action figure form. I don't really know why. I assume it's cheaper and easier to sculpt him with pants on... But he's drawn a lot with pants on as well. Maybe people think it's better than him walking around in underwear.

As for why the pants don't show his rocky form? "Ben wears highly durable costuming composed of unstable molecules" which I assume means they don't show off his rocky form.

I like him. Let's see if I can find one at a convention or something...
