Contemoprary Toy Shopping in Hong Kong

I'm primarily a Superhero collector, but other than some Superdeformed Superman UFO catchers (including 80's Flashdance Supergirl), and oddball bootleg Bearbrick type figures, it's been dissappointing (although I have yet to visit the Hot Toys showroom in Kowloon). Even Toys R Us only had one or two infinite heroes peg hangers. Ten years ago by comparison, there was a relative wealth of oddball SuperDeformed Superheroes (many of them bootleg) to be found in the stores and street stalls.

Ben 10 seems to be huge here, there was even a guy dressed up as the character standing around Sogo, the japanese department store.

Fans of Kamen Rider, Power Rangers, Ultraman, Kaiju/Sentai, Gundam, Shogun Warriors/Giant Robots, Transformers, Disney and the oddest of all, Mochichi, would be in heaven.

At a store devoted entirely to Mochichi, they even had Mochichis dressed as Captain Harlock, Utraman, and Starblazers.

The 12" lt ed "customs" I've seen are pretty mind-blowing. It hilarious how they name them, but it's really obvious who they are... "Detective Johnny" is Bruce Willis in Die Hard, Relic Hunter is Indiana Jones with a blacked out silhouette on the package, etc.

Even some really unlikely stuff like Forrest Gump.

Thus far, the prices actually aren't as reasonable as I thought they would be compared to ordering online. But I haven't hit the really hardcore toy-malls in Kowloon yet.

I went to Macau for the day, and the toy shopping really wasn't that much different from Hong Kong, except for the much more limited selection, the one dedicated toy collector store that I did find via google was located in an alley down a sidestreet and was closed. They looked like they mostly dealt in Gundam.

Dr Slump, Doraemon, Smurfs, Disney, Ultraman, Astroboy was amongst the stuff I saw in a couple of stores.

Of course most people are there for the casinos, not really any place a specific toy collector would visit.

Disappointing because my childhood memory of my visit there was a wealth of die cast Shogun Warriors and Gatchaman stuff. I think that is where I picked up my Great Mazinger 5" die cast as a kid.

The Hot Toys showroom was pretty cool, particularly if you're only used to seeing pictures of their stuff online. I was actually hoping that they had a better representation of their archive, but their display window was only showing off the current and upcoming releases. Makes sense.
