How do you feel about the "cutesy " trend in Action Figures? ( Super Squad)

It started with the hit of the Rescue Rangers. Big Feet, Big Hands etc.

Now we got little mini Freddy Krueger, Darth Maul, Punisher RED SKULL! etc?

Who knew making a deadly space blaster big and clunky would work?
    CUTE GUNS!

I can't stop thinking about the lesson I nastily learned about Catfood.
It only smells that way to seem yummy to US. Stuff doesnt taste like what it smells at ALL!

My point? Little kids can handle regular action figures without them being cute.

    Mego wasnt cute.

So do you like them? Do you buy them for your kids, do THEY like em? Whadda think?

(ps have they made Dr Who yet?)

MY BAD PLEASE MOVE THIS TO MODERN TOYS

I don't mind them too much, as a novelty.

However I do dislike the current trend of dumbing down toys for kids. Kids aren't stupid.

Back in the eighties, on a trip to Asia, I discovered the Japanese "Superdeformed" figures and have been collecting them ever since.

When the trend eventually arrived in North America a number of years ago, I did pick up a few examples here and there, but they all seemed to lack a certain comical charm that the Japanese figures had.

The Japanese SuperDeformed figures were Caricatures rather than "Baby" type figures or simply a straight up interpretation of the North American character with a large head and small body.

Just as an example, a Japanese Hellraiser SD figure...

I'm with Sam on this one. The stuff done in Japan back in the 80's has SO much more character and charm than our knock offs... I have some of the old school stuff from Asia, but don't really buy any of the American stuff. I do love me some Kubricks, though...

My son likes the Super Squad and Action League figures. He plays with them "straight" as if they aren't tiny and goofily-proportioned, unlike the uneven Super Hero Squad cartoon.

As a parent, I like them because they are a decent value and a fairly cheap by if you're kid is pestering you for a toy.

I do have a bit of a problem with the modern comics influencing them. Adult-themed stories such as Blackest Night and whatever Marvel is pushing this month seem a bit dark for cutesy action figures.

The only thing even slightly cutsie I ever bought were Hogan's Heroes bobble heads --- Only because they were the only things Hogan's Heroes related out there at the time.

                        RED SKULL !!

                        I saw a RED SKULL !

I remeber when Marvel first got into the Big Feet Rescue Rangers types they said they would never do Red Skull, Punisher, or Ghost Rider.

                        Yet . . .

I don't mind them for kids under 6 b/c most superhero toys aren't age appropriate for small kids. But as a toy collector of 44, I pass.

I was going to chime in here and say NO to cutesy figures, but... I dunno, I'm kind of digging that deformed Hellraiser figure. There's something kind of cool about it... alright, FOCUS. The fake, commercialized art toy stuff and Fisher-Pricey-type stuff get a big thumbs down from me. I can't imagine liking that Imaginext stuff even when I was a kid, not once you've seen the cool stuff just down the aisle. When I was in pre-school me and my friends were playing with (and watching) Star Wars, He-Man, Thundercats and the like. We all turned out fine. For the most part.
