    Star Wars: tempted by LUMIYA!

Spotted the Lumiya/Luke Skywalker comic two pack today and was REALLY tempted to pick it up even though I don't really collect Star Wars anymore and I'm trying to be good with my budgeting.

I've always really dug this character since seeing her in the later Post-Jedi issues of Marvel's Star Wars.

    DARK LADY OF THE SITH!!!

Fantastic figure. Love the detail, and particularly the Light Whip. Such a wonderfully unique weapon amidst all the various light saber wielding figures.

Boy, am I glad I don't collect new SW.
There must be 5,000 figures now?

The total count has gotten muddied by collector fickless (some count package variants, some count each mold/color change) and hasbro (counts by single releases of new figures excluding repacks and varaiants). so it's anywhere from 1500 to 3000. personally I only get the SW figs I like becasue of the volume of figs and frequency of minor variants

It's astounding how a well done TV show can keep the franchise going like this. Around this time after the original trilogy, you could be picking up Power of the Force and Droids figures three for a dollar. Instead Toys R Us has an entire wall dedicated to Star Wars action figures.

I dig the fact that so many of them are bought by kids and not just forty year old collectors.

This goes both ways for me. It's cool on one hand that a new generation is into SW, but for the love of God, will it ever end? How about something NEW and ORIGINAL, Mr. Lucas??? Ya know, like that press conference you gave in like 1990, where you said you were done with Star Wars, and wanted to move on with new, original ideas???

I think the critical and commercial beating he took on Radioland Murders sent him scurrying back to Indy and the Star Wars gang real quick.

But yeah, for a guy who took so many wonderful risks at the beginning of his career, it would be interesting to see if he does have anything else to say as a filmmaker.

Perhaps something more personal like American Graffiti. Or another stab at a fantasy epic in the vein of Willow. Or even trying to redeem himself by taking another kick at the can with screwball comedy.

Although maybe he's content now that Star Wars has in fact proven to be his life's work and come to peace with the fact that it will be the thing that he is forever synonymous with in the history books.

At the end of the day, even if it's just a handful of other films in addition to the six Star Wars movies, it's still a legacy that most would be proud of.

I would suspect that even though Speilberg has proven to be much more versatile, talented and prolific, it's still Lucas and Star Wars that will have the most pop cultural impact a few generations down the line. As much as it is self aggrandizing when it comes out of Lucas' own mouth, Star Wars does appear to have tapped into something mythic that's taken on a life of it's own well beyond it's creator's own limits.

              Neat!

I got mixed feelings about the new Star Wars figures. They've got lots of great stuff, and lots of amazing play potential, but they also make lots of.... odd choices. I think it's great they're making stuff from some of the older and almost forgotten branches of the mythos. The Marvel comics were really good and deserve more recognition. (Whay, No Jaxx figure? For shame, Hasbro!)

I'm lukewarm (get it?) on collecting them though. CUSTOMISING them is another thing.
