    Trek Communicators Compared

These are pics of the Classic Trek Communicators vs. the New Trek Communicator. I don't own an Art Asylum Classic Communicator so it's not here. The other Classic Communicator pictured is of an unknown manufacturer but used to be available on eBay for approx. $60.

What's missing? No flip-top Communicator toy has ever been commercially available for Star Trek II. I do own a set of Star Trek III walkie-talkie communicators but they are not accessible, (buried in a box at my parents house somewhere).

The communicator design is really one that I'm not digging. It looks more like a cheap $20 cell phone to me, but then again, maybe that was the idea.
    It's all good!

The movie communicator does sort of (if you squint) resemble the cage era communicators...kind of. Cant beat the classic original though!

I just picked up the DST/Art Asylum classic Communicator. It's really nice quality, full size and has lots voice clips and sound effect as well as three different flashing lights. The only downside is, it does have a pretty audible buzzing sound when open because of the spinning motorized rotating array. How does that compare with the Playmates classic communicator?
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I have a Playmates communicator from the mid-90s (the first edition?) that records about 3 seconds of crappy-sounding audio on an internal chip. Still pretty cool, though!

Not Playmates. I can't remember who did that one but it had the recorder chip and the lift up disc to see a digital clock underneath. It's #2 in these photos.

I have the more recent AA/DST version as well (did a review awhile back - Star Trek The Original Series Phaser and Communicator - Another Pop Culture Collectible Review by Michael Crawford, Captain Toy)

It kicks all kinds of butt. I just wish they'd get the damn tri-corder out!
