I don't think it's that bad a design. It could have fit in the context of ST-TNG. If you would have wanted a ship in TNG era like the old Costituion II class. Here it's compared wit Art Asylum Enterprises:
Thanks Mike. The Classic E is AA not Playmates, yep! If you look carefully at the descriptions where it's sold online you will notice that AA made Captain Pike's E, Kirk's Pilot E and the Series E, (the only one that has lit warp engines). The Playmates NEW E is pretty good actually. The battery placement in the saucer is awkward and they made no attempt to hide screws as AA did on their ships but they have stepped up their detailing somewhat-tho the paintjob is just bluegrey/grey. I may have a few more pics to post later today.
Nice comparison series. Thanks for the pics.
Can't say I like the re'new' design. Looks like a next gen take. But, as my grandma always said, "to each his own". The thing that always grabbed me was the round engines. I recall being quite shocked at the 1701A and the rectangular design. But, that was an all new ship. I understand the nipping and tucking for a fresh look on the ship, but I sure do wish those engines were tubular.
Post up some pics of the different tv 1701s if you get a chance and thanks for sharing.
Great pics. The new Playmates ship looks a lot nice than I thought it would. Thanks for posting them.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...
I added 2 more pics: 1 at the top-1 at the bottom. The warp engines are closer together. The thing is it doesn't look that funny from "most" angles. It's not something I can explain very well. You have to hold the toy in your hands and look at it. Check out other threads I'll post on the field equiptment.

Once again, I don't think it is horrible or anything, but I do gotta disagree with the engine spacing. It does look a bit odd. Very cramped and takes away from the grandeur of a large space vessel. Makes it look a bit chopped and channeled. That and the taper. Just looks cramped.
I do like those dark shots you added to the top of the post. That AA 1701 is the shiznit! and I love the way the engines light up the top of the saucer. Awesome.
I still think the "new" Enterprise looks chubby. And yeah; it looks a little Next-Gen for me; too rounded for a prototype considering the straighter edges of the original.
Wow, thanks for the comparison pics, I have the new Enterprise and the original from Playmates. For some reason I thought the AA ones were larger than they look in the photos. Good to know.
I agree with the nacelles being too close. The entire ship looks ungainly from certain angles, and I believe if the nacells were moved out it would correct this problem. The secondary hull design drives me nuts too.
Here's the 4th version of the AA Classic Enterprise. They are calling this the High Def version but it looks like it sports the inaccurate paint job that the one in the Smithsonian was painted within the 1990's as well as the controversial "deflector grid patttern" :
