First and foremost. This is a review that I am writing based on MY recent experience so far with the new Star Trek Spock figure. This is of course is just MY opinion as everyone is entitled to their own.
I finally got around to opening up the 6" Spock figure today. I am usually not one to open anything that is a collectible unless the package is in pretty bad shape. That is just me. Any who.... This particular package was in excellent condition and I opened it anyway to write this little review.
The BAD news:
The belt was too small to fit around a male Mego waist.
First and foremost getting the figure and some of the accessories out of the packaging and out of the plastic insert is a real B*TCH! There are very small little like bread ties holding the figure in place. If you have big fingers such as I do it is a bit more challenging unraveling each of the little bitty ties to untie the figure from the shell. In Spock's case I think there was like six ties holding him. A bit over kill IMO. It is also a little more time consuming then I care to endure just to get a figure out of a shell and play with it. Looking at it from a young kids perspective wanting to hurry up and get the toy out to play with it.
The belt fastener kind of sucks. It comes apart too easily and I find myself having to refasten it at the least little bump or touch as it pops off way too easily falling off of the figure.
The phaser does not seem to fit well in the holster at all. The phaser fit is real loose. As a result it of course falls out of the holster too easily and would be really easily to lose as it is so small.
The GOOD news:
I took Spock's Vulcan sign hand and tried it out on a Mego wrist socket. It did not fit well as it was a bit too small for the male wrist socket. This same hand did fit excellent and very snug on the female Mego wrist socket. (For whatever that is worth
) I was really hoping that is would fit on the male Mego wrist socket. Like they say though wish in one hand and sh*t in the other and see which one gets full the fastest.
The good news here as it atleast fits the female Mego wrist socket for a custom of some sort.
The company did do a good job on the packaging so it would not get damaged very easily from shelf shuffle and kid abuse at the store. I do not think that one has to worry about the corners bending easily at all. That much credit I will give the designers.
The phaser and communicator are both detailed very nicely. The phaser being the neatest. These will both work with Mego's although just a hair small IMO. Too bad they were not both just a "little" bit bigger. They would still both make for neat for Mego customs of some sort.
The figure itself (speaking for the Spock figure anyway) is pretty nice. Very well articulated. The Vulcan hand sign is neat and it interchanges easily with the figures wrist socket. They are two choices/inserts you can choose from. The Vulcan hand sign or the phaser grip hand.
The actual shirt that Spock is wearing (minus the arms) is made from a removeable rubber like material. Has a pretty neat feel to it. I just figured that it was molded on with the rest of the body parts when viewing it through the package at first glance.
The figure comes with a neat Star Trek emblem logo stand. Can it be used for a Mego? Maybe?? I have not tried it yet. However, with a little bit of work I "think" it can be made to work as a Mego stand.
And now last but certainly not least.....
The packaging is a pretty nice shell. I took the guts out of the package and stood a Mego Spock inside it and I think that he looks pretty darn good in the package. He fits well as I first thought that maybe the height of the Mego would be an issue. It was not. May want to consider a little modification to the inside of the package so the Mego figure will not fall down or slide around inside the package.
Over all the figure itself looks to be a pretty good rendition for Spock especially when compared to his counter part Captain Kirk which I think is totally horrible.
Was the figure worth the overall price of admission (purchase price) for a few possible Mego customs? I think not.
To each their own I suppose. Although I do kind of like the package design to put one of my loose Mego Spock's in.
