While trudging through the savage trenches of retaildom, making an honest attempt to get my Christmas shopping done on time this year, I stumbled upon a gem! Something so cool, I forgot all about my quest for gifts, and I thought only of myself
Chap Mei, makers of some of the coolest toys ever, has released a new line of 3 3/4" figures and playsets called Adventure Heroes. Basically a bit of a rip job of Indiana Jones and the modern Mummy flicks, the line features at least three "mummy hunter" heroes, and a bevy of cool bad guys. I grabbed two of the playsets myself. One called "Tomb Protector" comes with mummy hunter Captain Sandy Storm (think Indy with longer hair and rolled up sleeves) on a camel. It also comes with a mummy in a sarcaphogus, and a scorpion king type villian called Bomani, who comes with a large scorpion that can be used seperately, or you can "merge" Bomani with it to make one evil creature. The set also comes with a ton of accesories, that are --unusually for Chap mei--in scale to the figures.
The other set I grabbed is called The Mummy Attacks, and comes with another Captain Storm with a Hummer and accessories, a treasure chest, and a big ol' mummy called Evil Oba, who is big enough to interact with 8" Megos. Oba has light up eyes and teeth, and a huge centipede like insect that is crawling through his rotting body.....Oh, he also has a little evil mummy that bursts out of his chest!!!
On my way out of the store, I noticed another bunch of playsets being brought out from the stockroom...as I had already gone through the till, and didnt want to revisit another half hour line up, I just looked at them. One set had a bug like aircraft and came with a pilot character named Skyboy Stratus. The villian in the set was a nasty looking fellar named King Tuttenskull who looked like the undead warriors from the first Mummy movie. He had a huge snake for a sidekick, and like Bomani, he could be merged with the snake to make one mean undead snake!
Another smaller set had a guy named Markus Mole (Chap Mei really needs to work on their hero names) who looked like a cross between the Penguin and Mole Man. He had a really weird (ie-Lame) motorcycle thing, and was paired up with Anubis, who looked just like Anubis should.
The packaging also included pics of a Temple playset, that looked like an Egyptian tomb, but also had a huge rolling rock trap (wonder where they got the idea for that?) and a mining car (again...wonder where?
) that fits on the same track the boulder rolls on.
Also pictured were some generic Army of the Undead type characters.
After seeing the fantastic "generic" stuff Chap Mei comes up with, I wonder how they havent grown to become the next Hasbro or Mattel? These guys are quietly putting out some of the coolest toys in toydom!
