Darth Vader wants to put you in a new Chevrolet!

Thomas Berry sent me this wonderful flashback to add to the Superhero Mall Appearance Gallery. It's the Lord of the Sith himself at Joe Romania Cherolet Dealership in Eugene, Oregon back in October 1978. Thomas also mentions a Jawa but he seems to be camera shy.

Thomas tells me he keeps these photos in a 1978 edition Vol 1 of the Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia. Which he bought for $.09, at the old Safeway in Springfield OR, the same day he saw Darth.

He stopped in for some Armor-All, but stayed for the prices!

I have vague recollections of a Vader appearance in my town. When Star Wars came out, I was only 2 1/2. So I guess my parents thought I was too young to see it when it finally made it to our town. But my Dad did take me downtown the night of the premiere to the Hallmark shop my mom worked at to meet this big tall guy in a black suit and helmet. He really freaked me out. Later on, I was still intrigued by him enough to buy a figure of him.

Years later my Mom told me who the Dark Lord of the Sith was...her boss!!! The guy who owned the Hallmark Shop was behind the mask. He was a really tall guy in good shape, taught karate in his spare time, so not a bad substitute!

I can tell, as a first person, eye witness account, it was a cardboard stand-up. My Mom took the photos. The only costume characters were Darth Vader and a Jawa. However, I did go on the last day, they were there. They may of had more on the first day.
