I enjoyed your article! I don't recall ever having any of these glasses but I do recognize them as being iconic mid-70s coolness. I like the reasons you state for why each glass sits where it does on the list. Your comments about Cap's cape being all yellow like the Mego figure made me chuckle.
My own Top 5 would be:
5) Green Arrow: I love how the arrow he shot is captured mid-flight. And, you're right, as a character he got a surprising amount of attention in DC merchandise in the '70s.
4) Wonder Woman: Such an iconic pose that just makes me think of the '70s and the TV show. If they ever update these glasses, this image with actually metallic gold on the lasso that went all the way up to a golden rim "loop" would be fun!
3) Superman: I love Curt Swan art and with the yellow circle behind him it looks like he's drawing all his powers from the sun. Very cool.
2) Captain Marvel: Even with the miscolored cape, this is such a cool, iconic pose for the character in the '70s.
1) Supergirl: This is my favorite costume for Kara. Maybe the Mego figure had an influence on me, I don't know, but it was such a cool but respectful update from her original Silver Age look. Again, it just captures '70s DC comics perfectly.
Great article and loved looking at the pics! I didn’t have any of these as a kid, but I had what must’ve been a second DC series from later in the 70’s. I recall getting them at Taco Bell and they didn’t have the moon and the images were different. Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Batman, and others IIRC.
Just wondering, Chris, have you ever done an article on the 7-11 Slurpee cups from the same era? If so, can you post the link?
Dan Greenfield, the man behind 13th Dimension has run several slurpee articles, but not by me. We've never had 7-11 stores in my home state of Kentucky, so I have no real exposure to them, other than at occasional out of state toy shows and antique malls!
