The VMFA had an exhibit "Toys of the 50s, 60s, and 70s". I don't remember how much it cost, but it was absolutely delightful. Not just for the nostalgia rush, but it was informative and gave some insightful cultural context. It had a really great exhibit book too!
I've never been to the Strong Museum of Play, but lots of upstate NY family and friends recommend it. Among other things, the Strong does the Toy Hall of Fame. It is on my todo list to visit it one day.
There's a toy museum in Rochester, NY called the Strong Museum of Play that's well worth the price of admission, whatever it is now. It has the hall of fame of toys in it, so a lot of stuff I don't have, but enough that I do that I feel strangely vindicated.
