    Toy-Ventures: Glasslite Dracula

It's MONSTER MONTH on Toy-Ventures and to kick it off, we're going to look at the Dracula toy line by Glasslite of Brazil. A super curious and wonderful use of the character that is now highly coveted by collectors.

I was watching this with a mild curiosity, more because I enjoy your videos than an interest in the figure when BAM!... you show that car/figure set! I immediately strapped on a bib and began clanking my my knife and fork together over the delicious absurdity of that set. It is hilarious.

I'm locked in a battle with my inner collector and inner hipster over that set. One side thinks it's silly, the other agrees and wants it.

My daughter and I were watching this, and she chuckled at Dracula and his car...but then I reminded her we just saw The Monster Squad at the drive-in this weekend...and Drac had a custom car! It didn't have his name stickered all over it...but still!!!

Great video as always. That package has a visceral, Neal Adams Power Records like quality, despite his Dracula there being oddly blonde.

Probably for tax reasons... now Drac can deduct his personal vehicle as a business expense...

I like that Drac has time to promote Power Records before he admits to blood drain the Werewolf.

              WAIT!

Is the Dracula car just a small misstep in the career of one of the greatest businessmen/promoters the world has ever known?!?

The '30s and '40s- Drac burst on to the Hollywood scene and rides his popularity over several movies well into the 40's.
By the 1950's, he brilliantly embraces the caricature he's become and starts doing parodies like meeting Abbott and Costello in their Frankenstein pic or meeting Old Mother Riley (1952)
Once again reinventing himself in the early 60s, Drac jumps on the cocktail scene aesthetic of bright colors and formal wear to go gothic with the Hammer and Hammer-like films.
As the mod scene dies out and horror starts getting super gory and more devil-oriented, Dracula goes through incarnation in the 1970s. He goes kid-friendly, connecting with us through Ghoulies, Clubs and Scooby Doo.
As his 70s audience grows into 80's teens, he evolves into more teen-oriented tellings, taking advantage of the rental market. Mostly producing from behind the scenes, we get new wave vampires in the Lost Boys, coming of age vampires in Monster Squad, teen sex comedy Once Bitten and even a yuppie vampire in Vampire's Kiss.
The 90s saw hip hop go mainstream and there is no more street cred than OG cred, so Dracula goes old school himself with a return to Bram Stoker and Anne Rice.
A new century needs a new vampire. We may not have cared for the new Dracula but just like when Madonna went dance club, we are not the audience. Emo vampires are a HUGE hit that carries Dracula well into the 2010s on merchandising alone.

Where he goes next is anyone's guess. Drac is clearly the David Bowie of the monster world.
