    Action Figures 1982

1982 gave you your choice of Lucasfilm action figures, Spielberg action figures, or if you were feeling particularly adventurous Lucasfilm/Spielberg action figures. Such variety!

This just makes me feel old as I was "too old" for action figures in 1982.

Nah. Listen, in 1982 I was 14/15 years old, 8th/9th grade. I collected MOTU, Super Powers, and Sectaurs first-run and loved every second of it. I began re-collecting Mego then, too. I didn't collect during college but resumed thereafter. Admittedly, I didn't have that "Ooh, girls" detour to distract me.

Remember when you would enter the toy aisles in a department store back in the 1980s and there were so many options to choose from? Toys were so much cooler back then and the selection was off the charts. I understand kids these days aren't necessarily into toys like kids were back then, which is a shame because I honestly feel they have no idea how much fun and excitement they are missing.

I do miss the variety, even seasonally. Certain chains would have a huge selection of toys in an expanded department for the holidays, it was magical. And then came clearance, which wasn't bad, either.

We will never again see toy shelves stocked like the 70s and 80s. But blame retailers not children.

For one thing, I don't believe the profit margins on toys are as high as other merchandise and stores keep a much smaller inventory than they used to. When the big toy store chains, TRU, Kaybee, etc., are gone there's no reason to go to the work/expense of maintaining a large heavily stocked toy department. When shelf space is so limited we will also never see the variety we used to. But again this has nothing to do with kids. They can't buy what isn't there or become interested in a new line they will never see.
You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

I miss those days. You had Children's Palace and Toys R Us in addition to the retail chains like KMart, WalMart and quite a few specialty shops as well. Action figures ruled the toys shelves.

Let's face it, Walmart and the other big chain stores are pretty much glorified grocery stores these days.

They sell WAY more grocery and house hold goods than toys. That's another reason why we don't see playsets like we used to. It's not that kids don't want them. But again you can't buy what isn't there. A store like Walmart just isn't going to set a side its very limited toy shelf space for a large and expensive playset. Some exceptions are if you are one of the absolute top selling brands like Barbie or like TMNT was during 2012-17 and then only for the Christmas season.

Losing TRU really sucked for the hobby, for kids and the toy industry. We will never see anything like that again in the States.

And the thing is you had no idea what was coming until you saw it on the shelves. I think toys on the shelves today are just "there" if mom is shopping with a kid and the kid wants a toy . If the GI Joe or He Man peg is empty today I'm pretty sure the clerk could care less if it's restocked asap or three weeks from now.
