Pod Stallions 78: Raiders of the Lost Ark

In honour of CBS bringing back the Sunday Night Movie this week, we decided to cover Raiders of the Lost Ark and we have a special guest, Ned Hastings from Adult Swim!

We cover our childhood discovery of the film and our respective takeaways, the toylines from Kenner, LJN, and Star Toys. Our appreciation (or lack therefore of) for the sequels and basically all kinds of the usual straying from the topic like seeing films with tons of nudity with your parents, old timey movie theatres and programs, old James Bond, Mad Mission 4, your dad seeing a movie before you and the guy who played "Toht".

It's a fun car ride, join us won't you?

Please give us spirited debate in our new Facebook group.

Very enjoyable. Brought back a lot of fond '80s memories, though I first saw Raiders on HBO and not in the theatre. I recall it being hyped in Dynamite.

I was a great fan of Tales of the Gold Monkey and have the dvd set, too.

Something that occured to my during your discussion of Raider's style and mention of Buckaroo Banzai was the forum's recent thread on cinematic Doc Savage. Banzai and his coterie is a sort of modernized Doc and his crew. And any new Doc film will likely be judged in the light of Raiders and found wanting.

There is not much to add to what you've said about the film other than thanks for the trip down memory lane.

As for the ripoff/cash-in/"inspired by" productions, I definitely liked the Tales from the Gold Monkey--I haven't seen it since it ran, but I remember it having a sense of fun that felt much like Raiders. I wanted very much for Bring 'Em Back Alive to be better--I used to watch a show on PBS Sunday afternoons called "Afternoon at the Bijou" that had a cartoon, a live action short, and serial chapter, and some B movie. They mostly showed westerns, but I remember seeing the 1930s film version of Bring Em Back Alive with Frank Buck playing himself, so I felt like I had some sort of inside knowledge for that series when it came on, but what I remember is that it was very slowly paced for me as a kid. As for Casablanca, my film buff and film professor dad's favorite actor of all time is Humphrey Bogart, and he's watched some dreadful things in his life, but I remember him watching the premiere and giving up on it. The thing is, a prequel to Casablanca could be very much like Raiders--Rick is identified by the Nazis as having been a gun runner, and Victor appeals to Rick's past because he knows Rick has always helped out the underdog, so there's a hint of action and romantic adventure. Then the show tried to just have him sitting in the Cafe American from what I recall.

I wanted to like the two Allan Quatermain films (I rented both from our local video store), but they were difficult to sit through as well.

I had the toys, but, like you, I basically only ever saw the first wave I guess. I didn't even know about the street scene playset or the truck being sold until later seeing them in some collector's ads. The Well of Souls was a beautifully made playset, and I actually was asked to bring in the Ark toy to Sunday School one time. But mostly I merged Indy into my western toys when playing.

And speaking of western toys (of which I am a huge fan), I have made the same comment about toys based on Butch & Sundance: The Early Years on this forum. You can tell no one had a formula for what would be a hit if that was the film they licensed. It's a pretty well done line about a pretty forgettable prequel film. Don't get me wrong--I'm glad it gave a few more figures I could collect, but it wasn't going to be the major hit in 1979 they were looking for, and it definitely wasn't going to be the next Star Wars. It did, however, give us the only figure based on Brian Dennehy. RIP.

Now I am thinking bout re-viewing High Road to China.

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

My friend Rob was the swing vote on which movie we'd see that weekend. His cousin was set on Cannonball Run but I wanted to see the on the cover of Rolling Stone called "the ultimate B movie." Even back then, I knew I loved old school, B movies. Raiders wasn't a B movie by any means, but it clearly was an homage. The fact that it was on the cover of Rolling Stone and Rob and my bond over musical swayed him my way. I was so glad I won that argument.
