Need help identifying this spaceman toy

Picked him up yesterday. He's 6" tall and I figured he was either a Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers figure from the 50's, but can't find any information. Looked up Ideal, Marx, Ajax and Archer images and found some that are similar, but no match. And what's with the string? Couldn't find any brand markings on him. Wonder if he's a knock-off.
