help idenifying 1960s toy fire engine used in TV's Thunderbirds

    Hi guys

this is my first post, and bit of a weird request, Ive had a bit of a lurk and was wondering if you may be able to help me, it certainly looks the place to ask.

firstly my names Mike, Im 24 from Liverpool uk.

and aswel as being an avid model making fan, I love the old Gerry Anderson 1960s tv shows, and what I like doing is making replicas of some of the model vehicles used in it, many where converted from household objects, toys and model plastic kit parts, which if you can identify and find them, makes it easier to make replicas.

Im currently working on a weird wacky futuristic fire engine from a few episodes, which uses 2 1960s toy amphicars from Hong kong, and lots of airfix kit bits, but Ive hit a bit of a problem....

I aquired 2 of these toy amphicars many years ago at toy fairs, in a battered state, but good enough for what I want to do to them, ie convert them to studio replica models.

but on the studio model, there was a fire engine ladder which Im pretty sure is taken from a large toy fire engine from the 1960s, but I cant find it anywhere, ive looked at lots of toy fire engines on the internet but havent been able to recognise it, it looks like a metal extendable ladder with a rack arrangement that allows you to raise and lower the ladder, does anyone recognise what toy this is from at all? I would like to try and have the exact same toy ladder on my replica. the ladder would be approx 15-20 inches long and longer when extended.
theres still other things from it im trying to work out, managed to work out most of the kit parts, and find the old fashioned bulb holders, but the ladder is the main thing.

    many thanks

and great forum, there was lots of toys from the 60s used in Thunderbirds, Ive got pics of lots of them if anyone would like to see them

    cheers

    Mike

thanks for the welcome Bo8a Fett

actually, just thought on, I did do a thread about the diecast toys used in Thunderbirds a little while back on a sci-fi forum, might be easier to link to that one as theyres quite a lot of pics.

Cool ...have you seen that book "Century 21 FX - Unseen Untold", brilliant book with loads of behind the scenes photos (many never seen in print) and text from Alan Shubrook who was the youngest member of Derek Meddings team. It's great.
Love the Product Enterprise stuff...still after a Fireball XL5 and Shado mobile.

My kids rekindled my interest last time round before the ...cough...movie...we did the whole "build Tracey Island" thing but it got out of hand as I thought the Blue Peter one was rubbish and it ended up being a 5ft by 4ft monster with working palm trees, swimming pool etc...lol

this picture of the other side, is a bit clearer, and shows the wheels at the base of the ladder for raising and lowering the ladder,
does anyone know, for example, people who specialise in toy fire engines who they could recommend? like collectors or websites

                thanks

The wheels make it look like it's a Japanese Tin Friction style Fire Engine. I know Mego used to import to the US Tin Friction cars/trucks. Any idea of scale for the fire engine???

BTW, welcome to the Museum...anyone from the Birthplace of The Beatles is alright in my book.

thanks Bluemeanie, lots of Beatle related things happening in Liverpool at the moment, all great stuff

Im a big 60s fan, lots of things like the Beatles and why I like Thunderbirds

the size of the ladder would be pretty big, which is what has led me to think that it was an american toy, as Ive checked out most of the british stuff I know of and theyre a lot smaller, the toy amphicars which I have that they used as tractor units, are 12 inches long, so the ladder is gonna be about 20 inches long, Im not sure if the trailer is part of the original toy or whether theyve chopped a ladder from a toy

                    cheers

Im thinking this could have been the fire engine that they took the ladder from, then converted it to a truck as they never seemed to let anything go to waste

does anyone recognise what this truck could be?

the cab looks like its based on a real thing

and also the wheels look toy like, just ignore the tank on the back

                      thanks

and heres a rare photograph of it amongst 1/25 scale cars, Ive highlighted details that it has,

the wheel at the base to raise and lower the ladder,

the curved rack arrangement, and also a bent piece of wire to hold the side of the ladders together and also a flat headded screw

                            cheers

Wish I could be of help, but that ain't happening. That Silhouette police car parked in front of the Silhouette building is neat though.
