I just recently read another members thread regarding plastic cowboys and indians and it got me thinking.... Back when I was a kid I had these plastic toy soldiers that was purchased from a local store in a bag back in the 70's. These were not the typical green, gray, tan army soldiers by Timee or Processed Plastic. I have bought back plenty of those on eBay in the past. The best way that I can describe these that are in question is that they were dark blue and sometimes even a lighter blue and they were Cavalary men. I also had the Red coats and the Blue coats soldiers. All of these are basically the same type of plastic, the same size and maybe even the same mfg. I think they even all came from the same local store where the army men was purchased. However, I have looked time and time again for the Cavalry men and have had no luck in finding them. I would like to find some of these to add to my collection. I would also like to find some of the blue coats and red coats soldiers as well since we are now on the topic of plastic soldiers. Can anyone help me locate what I am looking for? I tried eBay some time ago for a long while with no results. Perhaps I am not looking them up under the correct name? It would be really cool if anyone out there has any pictures and or old ads displaying any of these figures. Does anyone know what I am typing about and is there anyone else out there that had/has some of these plastic toy soldiers that I am describing?

Bagged AWI and calvary in the 70's (in the US) could have only been a couple of different manufactures. Oddly the Revolutionary war was not that popular for US plastic figure makers. So I am basing all this on the few US companies I can think of that made AWI figs up into the 70'sI would know more if you could recall size, poses etc.
BUT, here are some guesses:
If the figures had no bases, probably made by Lido:
BUT, if the Cav figs were similar or matching maybe not. Lido had no true 7th Cav guys only ACW
My next guess would be these guys, not the same company, but nearly matching styles. However, I have no info about these figures being sold in header bags, if or when.
Ideal 7th cav
Andy Gard AWI
And my final guess, and the most likely would be MPC. They made bagged sets a plenty, the Cav and AWI figs pictured below were both common in the 70's
They would have been a tad smaller than most other plastic figures.
If none of the above are what you remember, that pretty much only leaves Marx. And I assume they were not marx as all marx figures are marked as such and if you've been thinking of this a while you would have already mined that clue. I can think of no other manufacturers that did both kinds of figs...
Unless you grew up outside the states... then everything changes.Comment

I had a set of those MPC soldiers (from the bottom photo) as a kid, but they were molded in a sort of metallic blue color, very distinctive, and I think they may have come with a four-sided, brown plastic fort.Comment

people list them as some sort of prototype.
there done such werid colors they don't fit in any army Diorama.
remenber these came out around 71-74 at a time when the military was unjustly seen in a bad light. so, repacking them in a "Hippie" sort of way to increase sales.Last edited by AAAAA; May 20, '08, 1:29 PM.Comment
