Butch and Sundance : The Action Figure Years

In the late seventies, Kenner released a line of action figures based on the Western film "Butch and Sundance : The early Years" which was a commercial failure. Kenner had done such a nice job on the toys that they attempted to repackage the line as "The Real West" in 1980.

The Real West would have included Butch and Sundance and added new Western Legends such as Geronimo and Jessie James, sadly the Real West line never saw release.

I say this far too much but this well made line is highly underrated and you might recognize a few of the pieces from it as they made it into other series such as "Indiana Jones" and "Star Wars"

I knew of the Butch and Sundance line, but I never knew they were planning on expanding. Too bad it didn't make it, between that and the Legend of the Lone Ranger line a few years later, we'd had a nice selection of 3 3/4 western figures.

I've never seen them in person, but I know the line is a huge sub hobby for many Star Wars collectors.

I wouldn't mind getting some someday, if I find the right deal, mostly just for the Star Wars and Indiana Jones connection

I had some 3/34 Western figures back then, but they weren't this line. It drives me crazy that I can't find what they were. I recall one had a grey waistcoat and I think he was Wild Bill. Very similar to these.

I always wanted these but could never find them they always haunted me every time I picked up a new comic!!!
I had some 3 3/4 western figures as well but do not know the name of them either.One guy was dressed all in black with a grey six shooter,removable black holster and the other was a native dressed in a darkbrown outfit with removable black holster and sixshooter,he also had two braids in hair???
I don't think I've ever seen them since...I know for sure they were not lone ranger.

very cool figures! i had all of them as a kid and loved that quick draw action. the guns were kind of odd for me because they were made of rubber and not the usual plastic like the star wars guys. i still have some of the figs now but of course they're pretty beat up

Empire Legends of the West

I remember these Butch and Sundance figures. They were pretty cool, but I loved the Empire Legends of the West figures and their horses, etc... I even had the FireCoach (I think that was what it was called).

I have all of these carded, with the horses, boxed playset and stagecoach... I vaguely remember some of the prototypes surfacing at one time, not for sure... I had those as a kid and loved them! What I would give for those 3 unproduced figurez!!

I still remember the day my buddy got the Star Wars droid factory for his birthday. The factory was normally unavailable here, but his dad bought it on a US business trip. Inside the box was a little fold out catolog for the Butch and Sundance line. The other guys spent the day making droids...I spent it staring at the catalog. Sadly, I could never find the line in the stores out here in Western Canada. Now, I find out this line could have continued into something even cooler...Ahhh, what could have been.

What I don't understand is why Kenner could do a cardboard bartender for this set yet couldn't have done the same thing when they used it for their Star Wars line.
