I could be wrong but I think Kenner was banking on the fact that kids would just buy it because it was a cool looking monster toy regardless of if they could see the movie or not.

Kenner had an Alien 3.75 inch scale line in the works too, the prototypes are kicking around the web somewhere, I'll se if I can find a link.

I have that one too. It's called "Heavy Metal presents Alien The Illustrated Story". It's pretty cool. I'm not sure if the adaptation was serialized in HM magazine first, or if they just published it as this graphic novel.

it's a shame no 4' figures were made i think they would have sold better than the 18' figure. i think you can say around the late 70's and well into 80's kenner was making better toy's than mego. kenner had star wars, alien, indy, and mego was makin' star trek tmp, love boat, chips.

I agree! Parents would have been less apt to notice the "ghastliness" (for the time) of the Alien, and bought the figures. I vivdly remember trying to get my Mom to spring for an Alien on clearance at an Army and Navy Department store (in Canada it wasnt an Army surplus store) --She took one look at it and said 'You're not bringing that ugly thing into the house!" I have a feeling more than one kids Parents said something similar.
