    Saturday Morning 1977

Recently I came across a TV Guide I'd saved since I was a kid, I don't know why I saved it. It has a Quincy on the cover and while I enjoyed that show (and now love comedian Jim Norton's "Jimcy" rants on the radio)it doesn't explained why I kept it. I am glad I did however because it gives me the ability to show what a six year old in Toronto was faced with on Saturday morning.

I cut off the 5am - 6am part, it's mostly "farm report" programming with the only kid like thing being "Hilarious House of Frightenstein" on Channel 11 (who actually made that series)

No wonder Monster Squad got cancelled, it was up against the Krofft Supershow, I'm surprised I watched it at all.

There is some Canadian content that some might not recognize, Circle Square was a christian show where everybody lip synched poorly. C.u.c.u.m.b.e.r (Children's Underground Club of United Moose and Beaver for Enthueastic Reporters) featuring two people wearing a Moose and Beaver costumes who encouraged kids to write, John Candy once appeared in spandex as a superhero and Martin Short played a rabbit. Harrigan was a Leprechaun who sang songs or something, I never watched it.

Shazam/Isis and Superfriends are the three big reasons I'm such a junkie for comic book movies today. By noon, my parents would either throw me outside or my older sister would have to get her Shatner fix (she was going to marry him) and turn it to Star Trek. Either way, I constantly got screwed out of Fat Albert and Ark 2.

I've said it before but now my children have three channels of cartoons to choose from, 24/7, I'd have killed for that as a kid bt now, I kind of wish they could experience a time like our Saturday morning...

Who the heck is Mumbly? (see 8:00, ch. 13 "Tom & Jerry/Mumbly")

Man, what a great lineup. The best of new shows (at the time) plus old classics (Spidey, Bullwinkle, 60s Batman, Star Trek). And the most schizophrenic cartoon HB ever produced...Jabberjaw!!!

Mumbly is basically Muttley from "Wacky Races" and "Dick Dastardly and Muttley" reinvented as a mumbling "Columbo" type detective, complete with rumpled trenchcoat.

And by then, Tom and Jerry were friends....walking around and meeting park rangers and strangers and helping them out of a jam. I HATED it. At some point, they were packaged with "The Great Grape Ape".

and i also started feeling what i probably felt as a kid--there are TOO many things on at the same time that I want to watch!!!! in each half hour slot there are at least two programs that i probably was bouncing between. early cause of ADD???

Remember the little "BW" to let the viewer know that a show was in black & white? I remember when (I think it was 1970) the went from a "c" to let you know a program was in color to "BW." Didn't really make much of a difference to me, a show I wanted to watch was a show I wanted to watch.
                      It's all good!

Haha! I'm typing this as I've come out of my time machine (aka my Saturday morning videos). My line-up today (it changes every week, b/c I have the mother lode of tapes!) was SuperFriends (Wendy & Marvin), Land Of The Lost, The New Scooby Doo Movies (Guest starring Speed Buggy and Friends), Electra Woman & Dyna Girl (The Pharoah), Star Trek cartoon, and Isis. But in 1977, I loved Krofft Supershow, Jabberjaw, Fat Albert, Isis, The Batman/Tarzan Adventure hour, and others. Thanks for sharing!

Ah, I remember him from "The All-Star Laff-A-Lympics". I honestly just thought they redesigned Muttley at some point, didn't realize he was "Mumbly".

Yeah in "Laff-A-Lympics" he was a bad guy and leader of the Really Rottens...so although he was "Mumbly" he reverted back to form personality wise as Muttley. Go figure. And I always thought that Dread Baron was a poor substitute for Dick Dastardly on "L-A-L". In fact, the whole Rotten team was just made up of poor imitations and substitutes for other baddies.
