Aurora MUMMY restoration WIP

About halfway through restoring my second Aurora monster kit.

The seams on this one are a nightmare, but he's coming along. Tons of detail to bring out with paint. I wanted some nice contrasting colors...somewhat colorful, but muted.

His skin is a combination of ash and green, with antique white mixed in for highlights. Still tons of work to do on the base.

looks great, do you have a before pic? I've seen some doozies of the old monster kits all bloody and stuff from kids painting them up.

Sometimes I put blood on them to match the box art, like the Mummy's Chariot. I don't think there's a wrong way to paint an Aurora monster. Even the trainwreck ones are great in their own way.

I recall my Mummy kit years ago--you're so right about the seams. I sanded and scraped for what seemed hours.

I like the color--and as always, your technique, but I think (as with the Mummy bust you posted awhile back) that I like a little more differentiation between Mummy "flesh" and mummy wrappings. That said, what Universal currently considers canon/on-model is too strong.

I remember the Bride of Frankenstein's seams being less forgiving even than the Mummy's. They are less ragged, requiring more perfection. Lotsa putty used on that one.

The Mummy (one of the reissues) was probably my favorite kit to do with my son. We had a lot of fun drybrushing the bandages and the relics. We went with a green face and hands too, for that "Monster Kid" effect. Looking great!

Here's an update...remaining bandages added. Additional shading done with charcoal. Working on drybrushing layer after layer on the base.

I'm having a blast with this one. This was the first monster model I ever built as a kid. I still remember sitting at the kitchen table painting him with Testors glossy enamels. I was 11 then. Here I am at 43 still sitting at the kitchen table building monsters.

I like what you're doing. The Mummy is my favourite kit to paint, the bandages give you a lot of character.

I remember doing the Mummy as one of the Illuminators kits that Monogram released... trying to cover that neon glow plastic with paint was a chore!!
