Pod Stallions 40: The Micronauts

I'm just having a little fun.

I totally fell for it, dur.

As a GI JOE cartoon fan you get used to that kinda stuff. If you lurk GI JOE forums enough you always come across a couple of guys who are comic book only and like to take pot shots at the cartoon. "The comic was all serious and grim dark and then the cartoon came along and ruined it! Grrr!!"

I don't play in those sandboxes but it never really dawned on me that others felt that way. I guess that's naive when considering the very nature of fandom.

As for the comic, I probably tapped out by '83 so I never really saw it go down trope hill (not surprised), I just moved on to Dr. Who novels and records by that point.

Although... dang it, Jason... I have been going around the house singing, "Chris Tallman, Chris Tall-man... He's a tall man. Chris Tallman is taller than you." You and your goofy, catchy ear worms!

Yeah, there's always some comic only guys that like to remind others how much they think the cartoon sucked and ruined GI JOE. I don't really get the mindset. I mean, I like the cartoon way better but I don't dislike the comic. Maybe because the cartoon drew in more female fans than the comic bringing in their cooties into Joe fandom? Lol, I don't know.

Great podcast. It was a delight re-visiting the Micronauts. I think the Bill Mantlo Micronaut and ROM Spaceknight comics remain among my all time favorites. The toys were just amazing.

Oh one thing you guys missed. Baron Karza Force Commander and their horses were unusual in a way you didn't mention. They were all originally Takara die cast toys from the TV show Kotetsu Jeeg. A rather garish yellow and green robot created by Go Nagai of Mazinger Z fame. Takara licensed the Jeeg bodies and accessories to Mego. But Mego had to create their own heads. So the head sculpts are all new, and the bodies are simply Jeeg bodies cast in black or white.


It's like Baron Karza does Carnivale, isn't it?



Sadly Mego never put out the extra accessories to turn Karza into a space ship or sub.

I thought turning Karza into a tank, w/treads would've been cool. Just remove his legs and plug him into the bottom half of the tank.
