Pod Stallions 39: The 2015 Retro Awards

Happy New Year! It's time for our annual salute to all the things that made us happy in 2015, especially those that harkened back to our childhoods and brother, did we have a lot to smile about.

The 2015 Retro Awards salutes the movies, books, magazines and toys we raved about this year and we also talk about special events and end by mourning some of the folks we lost.

These podcasts are always great as they manage to teach/inform me about the topics more deeply and get me thinking about things I either hadn't thought about before or at least hadn't done recently. Some comments you made towards the end about collecting really got me thinking this time.

You talked about the idea of collecting something that might be a taboo or difficult subject but not letting that fact define the collector (in this case, you talked about collecting Nazi memorabilia). I've known people who collected Klan memorabilia who were not racist (in fact, one was a very liberal African-American history teacher I had), who collected it as examples of 1920s propaganda (one of the eras in which the Klan had a very large public presence and were appearing in many mainstream publications). So that got me wondering if others had thoughts on collections that might require some explaining if one just walked in, unaware. The main thing that comes to my mind (having grown up in the South) would be either Confederate items or the various items made of "Sambo" or "Uncle Tom" or "Mammy" characters that play off negative stereotypes of African-Americans. Collecting something doesn't have to mean you fully endorse the ideology behind it, but I know that many do think that. What else comes to mind?

Some great stuff mentioned in this one, and some things I had never heard of I need to look into. I forgot about those Marvel collectibles books! I really need to pick those up. Totally agree on Monster Mash. It's such a personal look at the Monster Craze, I kind of felt like I was there, even though it ended before I was born! Great book with lots of fantastic photos.

Is Ash vs. The Evil Dead available on any of the streaming services? I'd love to binge watch it!

Got to this one today... Maybe your best, most heartfelt episode yet? Fellas, this was wonderful, and I'm not just blowin' smoke.

To anyone who's feeling the winter blues or needs a pick me up, give this one a listen. This really was a wonderful way to celebrate all the goodies we are fortunate to be able to enjoy, and proof that the best of times is now. I had to chuckle at Jason's movie picks contrasted against Brian's. Jason got all serious, and Brian... well, was Brian. Truthfully, I was delighted with how "mainstream" many of your picks were. There were lots of "Amen"s and "Preach it Brutha"s from me while I was listening in the car.

You guys are so right about Age of Ultron. Don't get the backlash. In fact, I went back to the start and watched the 2008 Iron Man again yesterday, and it is nothing short of remarkable how far Marvel has come, and the groundwork they layed from the beginning.

I really appreciated your statements about not wanting to pick apart our brand of entertainment, provided you had fun watching it. You're right... the internet has made it all too easy to criticize just for the sake of being contrarian. I think that'll be my 2016 forum resolution... to avoid being unnecessarily critical. Unless it's Batman V. Superman then all bets are off!

Brian, thanks for adding the Jaws line to your picks! And you're both right... the Flash Gordon line wins!! Let's get everyone buying MORE of them so we can get series 2.

And yeah, I got a throat lump when Brian mentioned the passing of Yvonne Craig. Last year was rough for deaths of our heroes.

This seriously was THE best look back at 2015, and I would encourage anyone who's never listened to this or any other podcast to start here. Thanks so much for a great recording, guys.

Anywayze, you guys rock for putting this out there. Can I be on the show? I want to just sit in the corner and chime in with a "Yup" or "Hallelujah" every once in a while. I'm not really joking.
