    Pod Stallions 36: Horror Comedies

A special Saturday episode of PodStallions to celebrate Halloween. We actually lost our Halloween episode due to a computer glitch, so like champions we recorded a new one yesterday.

Episode 36 is dedicated to the lighter side of horror as we tick down a long list of horror comedies and give our thoughts, everything from Abbot &Costello to the Lemon Grove kids to Young Frankenstein and even more modern classics like Beetlejuice and the academy award winning Jekyll and Hyde...together again.
    Happy Halloween everybody!
PS Joe Flaherty is a genius

This is a nice surprise on Halloween morn! When I first/finally got the SciFi Channel (neither my home nor college cable provider offered it when it first came along, so it wasn't until the late 1990s when I moved to grad school I got to see it), they used to show horror comedies very early on Saturday mornings. Through them, I re-watched the Abbott & Costello films and even got to see Wheeler & Woolsey in Mummy's Boys (probably marginally better than Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy, but basically a silly movie at best), as well as some of the other films you mentioned, liked Ghost-Breakers along with some of the Bowery Boys and late Bela Lugosi films that played to schlock. As always, this was a nice walk down memory land.

As a kid, I liked watching reruns of Addams Family and The Munsters, and I was always intrigued by a show like Struck By Lightning, just cause I wanted to see (and still do) Jack Elam as Frankenstein's monster.

Wanted: Legends of the West (Empire & Excel) and other western historically-based figures. Send me an offer.
Also interested in figures based on literary characters.

This will help with my post-Halloween depression on Monday morning when I'm back at work!

You guys are real troopers, recording a new episode just to get another Halloween one in!

One of your best so far.

I had one of those moments of clarity when someone else points out a truth about you that even you didn't realize. I loved Universal Monsters as a kid, but I never considered them even close to scary. You guys correctly point out that my introduction to classic monsters came through such child-friendly paths as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, The Munsters and even the Groovie Goolies. These images were firmly established before I got a chance to see Drac, Frankie, Wolfie, etc. in their more scary, adult formats.

Separate question- With all the retro networks around, why is there not one showing The Addams Family or The Munsters? I can pretty much watch almost any of my syndicated favorites from the Hogan's Heroes to Starsky & Hutch to bob Newhart. Do the monsters series come with particularly high licensing fees? A quagmire of ownership questions?

I'm glad you mentioned Bauhaus. Frontman Peter Murphy was the visual influence for Neil Gaiman's Sandman

You guys didn't get into the 90's, but one of my favourites is Peter Jackson's Dead Alive.

Nice overview of an often overlooked subgenre! Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein And Ghostbusters are perfect films. There can be watched at any time, no matter how many times you've seen them. I totally get your point about the Ghostbusters cosplay and fandom. I love the movie too, but the interest from cosplayers is a bit flummoxing. I wonder if it has anything to do with the wonderful role play toys Kenner made in conjunction with the cartoon? I was a bit too old for them by the time they hit, but I understand they were VERY popular.

I have Fearless Vampire Killers on the DVR, so I'm going to check it out this weekend. You've given me a great list of films to check out for the first time, or the first time in a long time, like Love at First Bite. Seems like it was on every weekend for years on the local syndicated station back in the mid 80s.
